Hi,

I would like to know which .177 pellets you use in your 1000+ fps Crosman Nitro Venom to obtain the best groupings ?

- Brands
- Models
- Weight in grains

I'm sure it can vary from a rifle to another but lets hear what your rifle like the most.

I bet the high end stuff is more consistent.

I know these rifles are not super accurate rigs but I'm sure you can obtain a decent accuracy out of them.

I also plan to mod this rifle but first I need to order some pellets and that's the reason I start this Thread.

Maybe I should add that I only want to punch paper...

Oh and why you can't EDIT your Post after some time on this Forum ?
This is annoying...

Of the 5 or 6 brands of pellets I've tried, I've found that JSB 4.52/8.44 grains (available from the forum's store) work best in my Nitro Venom.

The biggest improvement in accuracy I found was to modify the trigger into a smooth two stage.

The modification comes from Chevota on this forum.

I don't have that paticular rifle, but found the Crossman 10.5gr.(Ultra Magnum) RN's shot well in all my .177's - all high power.
The Cometa 4.51mm were the best from the HW97, but the BT65 shot the 10.5gr. a bit better. I was running it at 960fps IIRC.

Pellets tried in no particular order

H&N Field Target Trophy 4.51 (8.64)
H&N Excite 4.50 (7.87)
Crosman Premier Hollow Point 4.50 (7.9)
Crosman Destroyers 4.50 (?)
Grizzly (princess Auto) 4.50 (?)
RWS Meisterkugeln (wadcutter) 4.50 (8.2)
Gamo Pro Magnum 4.50 (?)
JSB Exact 4.51, 4.52, 4.53 (8.44)

Individual guns have different preferences. For example the Gamo Pro Magnum pellets (about the cheapest ones I have) work beautifully in my PAL Air Hawk, but not in any of my other guns. The Meisterkugeln watcutters are terrific in my Daisy 953, but I'm told anything over 700 fps and they lose accuracy. They don't work at all well in my PAL Nitro-Venom. JSB 4.52 works well in the NV also.

I keep a list in the shed with all my guns and what they prefer 1st & 2nd.

Peter,

So the JSB pellets are available in several diameters if I understand well.

How to know what is is the right diameter to match the bore diameter of your barrel ?
Do you have to *slug* the bore and take measurements or just trial and error ?

Cheers,
Ben L.

It's just trial and error Ben. That's why it's so much fun. 8)

Anything in the 4.50 to 4.54 size will "fit" a .177 barrel
Anything in the 5.50 to 5.54 size will "fit" a .22 barrel.

Air guns sometimes prefer one size over another. The reasons why can be complex and there are others on this forum far more qualified than me to explain/discuss it.

If you search for threads you can find a lot of stuff here.

A few years back I tested about 15 different pellets and H&N Field Target Trophy 4.52 (8.64) were the best grouping and best over chronny for consistency.
I had a thread with results...I'll see if I can dig it up.

That's very good numbers out of a nitro venum. I have a .22 rated for 950 FPs and I have tried a good selection of pellets and can't get much over 780 and my brother in law has the .177 and his cronies around the 800 mark with 10.5 lead pellet but is rated for 1100
