Baldwinsville Airgun Show FT Match report

Early Saturday morning (3:11 AM to be exact) was a mix of cloud and moon with the odd bit of sprinkling found along the Interstate as Baldwinsville was approached. The roads were center wet and in a few places east of the Montezuma Wildlife Preserve, there were puddles on the inside lane. Clouds were scattered but there were some very large low clouds that were the bearers of rain, however, not of them left any rain at the match. A stellar crew of volunteers joined me in setting up a 40 shot match that was strictly meant for novice and junior shooters but had 8 targets that were there to test the rest of us.

Sixteen shooters tested their abilities, including three junior shooters using Daisy 888 Avanti rifles with peep sights, and had a blast shooting the course of fire. There were four of us that dropped in from the Great White North and a couple of ladies amongst the crowd. There was no question about which target was the toughest, however, no matter who shot the crab target, no one was able to drop it twice. A nasty snake was another difficult target made so by the unpredictable wind that would be there one second and gone the next. The sun, heating the land, made some cloud banks that were almost guaranteed to bring a rise in the wind as they passed overhead. They were so fast that is was entirely possible to have no wind for one shot and nasty gusts for the next.

There were 12 targets (donated by David Day) set out from 10 yards (ok, one was a few inches short) to about 23 yards that had KZ’s ranging from 1.5 to 2 inches, which would drop from a shot out of a Webley Junior (yes, one did lock up on us and no amount of pounding would unlock it). It was a good shakedown for those targets as they are going to be a regular fixture when pistol FT matches are held at our clubs.

Changing things up a bit from last year, full AAFTA rules were used for the match, which did catch a couple of shooters unprepared, but they posted excellent scores, none the less. Junior shooters were scored 1 point for a hit anywhere on the target and two points for a knockdown. When they saw their final scores, the grins were so big that we were afraid of their heads falling off, lol. The results you see here are based on AAFTA Divisions with the junior shooters treated as a separate class. Congrats to the winners and runners up, and hope more of you can make it next year. Thanks to all that helped set up and tear down. Thanks to the Baldwinsville Legion and Larry Behling for the fun venue to hold this match and to the donators of the winner’s prizes. Take care.
