Hi,

I am new to this board and have a few questions regarding Field Target shooting.

I noticed in the Canadian Championship 2010 results there doesn't appear to be any Open Piston Class? Why?

How do you get a TX200 or HW97 to meet the 12 fpe limit of the WFTF division?

Also, there does not appear to be any Piston Gun competitors in the Hunter Division....any reason?

Sorry, if I am over looking something and these questions are lame.

Your questions are reasonable and fairly easily answered.

There was not an Open Piston Class because no one signed up to shoot in it.

There are kits that can be bought from various sources that allow the TX and HW to be tuned to pretty much any power level. Many of the guys that shoot piston class can tear down, tweak and reassemble their spring guns in less than half an hour. In fact I have on a few occasions seen guys tear their gun down just before a match after some perceived problem on the sight-in range and have the gun ready to go by the time the match starts.

We have had folks compete in hunter with spring guns, but due to the nature of spring guns, most prefer the ease of use of the pcp and CO2 guns. Spring guns are accurate, but the shooter must be very consistent in their hold and follow through to get the accuracy the gun is capable of. The spring gun also has to be held correctly to get the accuracy. Spring gun tuning and tweaking is an ongoing thing for the dedicated piston shooter. On the flip side, my ld/SS that I purchased in late 1999 has not been tuned or tweaked since that time and just continues to shoot as it always has.

I know for me and I am certain many would back me on this, that the first few FT matches that you attend are real eye openers. You see amazing gear and real friendly and helpful people that are just happy to see you and fill you in on anything you ask about. Those first couple of matches can take the place of countless hours of searching the net to learn about FT and airguns. I am not knocking the internet as it has opened up the sport to a great number of people and is an great asset to the sport. There is nothing like the real thing is very true in this case.

You keep asking questions and try your best to make it to a FT event, whether it is in Canada or the US.

I will do my best to attend a match as you have suggested. Are there any clubs and shoots in the Southwestern part of Ontario?

The sport of FT in Canada actually originated in Waterloo. Due to some unfortunate circumstances the Elmira R&GC no longer hosts FT matches. Currently there are indoor matches taking place in Burlington and outdoor matches(although currently restricted to under 500fps) taking place in Port Colborne, which is on the north-eastern end of Lake Erie, about 20 minutes from the border at Buffalo, NY. Port is about one hour from Burlington, two hours from Waterloo/London area and four hours from Windsor. We actually have a shooter that attends regularly, who drives in from the Windsor area.

Depending on where you are, I hope this helps.

Just for your information, there is a club in Plymouth Michigan (maybe 25 minutes from Windsor/Detroit) that host FT matches on a monthly or bi-monthly basis through the spring and summer months.

It will be worth the trip, without a doubt...

I drive 4 hours (one way) to each match, and it is worth every second of the drive. It is really a whole new atmosphere; everyone there loves airguns, need I say more? :wink: :lol:

Every one who comes out to these shoots are great people, very knowledgeable on their sport, and even more willing to share that knowledge and help out a new guy...

The sport of FT is very challenging and allows you to select different classes to vary the level of difficulty and shooting styles required. There really is something for everyone, actually, my Dad recently attended a match; he has never really shot my gun or had an interest to. But he missed a plane and decided he would just give it a try...he did excellent, especially considering the class he shot in (13/60 in WFTF, first match EVER, no practice EVER :shock: :lol: ) ....anyway, moral of the story, my Dad has mentioned "being a bit more prepared" and coming to try shooting another match, and he's a PB guy :)
