I'm new to Shooting Sports and interested in field Target but from my perspective this Killzone vs Hit The Zone discussion has nothing to do with politics or semantics or anything else other than lawyers.

Working as a volunteer with Ducks Unlimited in British Columbia taught me that the officials of small organizations are afraid of lawsuits. At the Ducks Unlimited AGM the treasurer would start his speech by saying "good news, we did not get sued this year".

For many small organizations a single lawsuit can mean the end of operations. The idea is not to give the lawyer something they can use to persuade a jury. If I was a paralegal I would jump on the word kill.

I see this hit zone as a semantics change specifically when language appears in printed form. The spoken names are less formal and I would expect each club would use whatever verbal adjective they like; hit, kill, bullseye.

Here's a legal scenario

Imagine there is a field target Club that wishes to lease a rural property for the purpose of conducting matches. A residential development nearby is opposed to the idea and hires a lawyer to intervene. The lawyer pours through the field club's documentation and pulls out the word Killzone. The lawyer uses this in an overhyped argument to appeal to City officials for zoning variances. Even if the club can successfully argue what a Killzone is the damage from the stigma of the word may already be done and the fate of the club sealed. There will be no shooting for the shooters in Shootersville.

I believe that you will find that all references in the CAFTA FT rules have been changed to "Hit Zone". Some still use the old terminology simply out of habit.

If the title to this thread could be changed to Hit Zone Size by one of the moderators, that would be greatly appreciated.

Pushtone, I hope you can get out and experience FT for yourself. Watching those targets fall can be pretty addicting.

Sounds like a really fun sport! I'd love to get into ft if there was a group in my area. Still hit zone sounds more inhumane than kill zone to me, but I agree that it's probably all about fear of lawsuits. Kind of crazy though hey! It's like most young people today, they've never had to cut a chickens head off or pluck one or had to go butcher a steer. Everything to do with killing is so far removed from them, yet the meat they eat in the supermarket was an animal that most likely has had a much less happy life than those many of us grew up butchering on the farm. I'd much rather have been one of the poor chickens on the farm I grew up on than the ones nowadays, lol! Or a pig =). They at least got to roam around their pens outside and eat fresh garden stuff and the pig even got to eat a shoe once (my little brother's, I know I was terrible! ). Anyway, seems like we've gotten so naive about life and death we can't stand to talk about it.
We'll either all have to become vegetarians or stop fooling ourselves about being so humane. Work a week in a hog barn or chicken barn and you'll think hunters are saints for choosing to eat something that got to really live instead of being trapped and cramped and abused their whole life. Such is the hypocrisy of modern society.

(my apologies for complaining about hit zone =), I'd be happy to call it whatever anyone wanted, if I could just join in the fun and keep everyone happy! I'm envious of you all who get to enjoy it, have fun!
