Indeed some nice pictures Kelly, thanks for taking them and posting here. Haru had a blast. So much so that his new IZH-61 has already been arranged and I've got a 6x32 Bug Buster with short offset mount on the way from D&L to put on it. Kid's very enthusiastic about shooting thanks to a halfway decent first time score of 16 out of 40. Wayne's score of 39/40 made his eyes bug out a bit with envy. He'll be along next month as well, then we'll see how it goes from there.

On the other hand... pictures like the first couple remind me I'm letting exercise slip again. Dang it. That belly has got to go.

Too bad FT is once a month only. I say every other week sounds great for me. See you later, I'll be on the range like usual. I will be at the rifle range as well, at least every Monday from now on. I have to practise for the Nationals metallic Silhouette. It is only 9 weeks away, just around the corner. I better get my but moving.

It's a shooting range, so the pellets contribute a tiny fraction of the lead being left on the landscape. We can hear the shot raining down behind us now and then from the skeet shooters. I wouldn't worry too much about it, having read the summary of a major US Fish & Game Dept. study a couple of years back which indicated that most shooting ranges contributed trace quantities of lead or less, well within safety standards.

Any chance you could point me to that study, GS?

Well having just spent a while searching my archives and online, it seems I can't. Sorry about that. It was something referenced about 2 years ago in a US shooting forum somewhere, can't recall which forum or what the subject was so I'm having no luck finding it there either. But in my searches today I see a number of EPA and other papers which indicate the sloughed lead (abraded from the bullets on impact with backstops and soil berms) is a concern in terms of its propensity for oxidation and conversion in reaction with airborne pollutants such as sulphur dioxide and many others, resulting in compounds of considerably worrisome toxicity. The bullets themselves tend to oxidize and remain for the most part stable, it seems, but the dust and flakes (about 1.5% of bullet mass with higher powered rifles, less with pistols and other low-powered weapons such as airguns) are the problematic element and seem to indicate that caution should be used in setting up shooting ranges. There's a LOT of information on this stuff online. A bit dizzying, and I've got work to get done...

So I'll leave it at saying 'oops, sorry, guess I was being careless in saying pellets weren't a problem' and move on, hoping that the Mission shooting club folks have the matter under control. I don't recall seeing any flowing water anywhere nearby. There is a tiny stagnant pond on the site, and a slightly larger pond across Dewdney Trunk Road from the range entrance. Seems unlikely such a long-standing club wouldn't have monitoring in place as well as precautions against contamination of surrounding waterways, otherwise the district wouldn't be likely to let them continue operation, would it?
