I'm looking at getting a HW98 and I'd like to use it for FT-style shooting with variable ranges to target. Can anyone suggest an introductory-level scope that could be used for this sort of thing?

Note: I probably won't actually be competing, this is purely for fun.

Hi cbf123, everything that you wrote points to you eventually 'competing' in FT. After you start hitting targets, you are going to wonder how well you would do against other shooters and the only way is to compete. BTW, competing and having fun are synonymous in Ft. You won't find a greater set of guys/girls anywhere.

I suggest you get a scope that can take heavy recoil and the Hawke Endurance 30 SF 4-16x50 Mil-Dot IR fits the bill and the price won't force you to rob the bank. :lol:

The Hawk Vantage may work well and cheaper than the Endurance. Mike has the HW and uses the older version of the Vantage.

I don't know about specific recommendations but for myself I prefer an adjustable AO and zoom levels on a scope.
Illuminated reticles are pretty but only necessary for low light conditions, IMO.

I really like the quality of a Bushnell Legend the forum store sells. great glass but alittle stiff on front A/O.

Hawke Vantage or Hawke Varmint (very much the same scope) in 4-16X.

Both varients appear to be using mil-dot reticle with MOA turrets. Mixing units would seem less than ideal, no? Or is it not a problem in practice?

The Hawke Sidewinder scopes with mildots also have MOA turrets.

I use a UTG/Leapers 8-32x56mm on my HW 97-kt.
Never given me trouble.
Heavy though, and a bit dim at 32x

they are many different models look at specs make sure it's min of 10 meters

I suggest you stay way from Futong/Fitco or whatever they are called, scopes and the outfit that sells them. In order to return it if defective (mine would not focus at any range), you need the original receipt, however none was included in the package I received from them, thus I could not return it. Seemed planned, that way.

I have bought over 7 scopes from them and only need needed replacement and I was able to print my ordered from there site and that was my bill of sale.

I think a really good scope for the money is either a Leapers 4-16 x 40mm
or a Leapers 8 - 32 x 56mm

These scopes are great, they may be a lower price, but they are great scopes for Air rifles, springer or PCP

Thanks everyone. I ended up getting a discount on a 2015 Sidewinder 4-16x50, so that's what I ended up with.

It's pretty good, only disappointing bit is that the optical center is quite far from the mechanical center so I'm stuck with limited (10MOA) windage adjustment to the left. If it ever becomes a problem I'll pursue it under warranty.
