My wife and I have been restoring a nearly 100 YO cabin out in the bush.... It has a dug basement about 40 YO, and we have trouble with packrats taking up residence.... We don't want to poison them and endanger the owls in the area, in case they die outside, so my wife has been shooting them with my Grouse gun.... However the scope won't focus close enough, and it hits way low at close range, because it is sighted at 30 yards, so I decided she needed her own rat eliminator....



It is a modded 2289 pumper that only takes 7 pumps to hit 475 fps with 14.3 gr. pellet, and it won't exceed 500 no matter how many times you pump it (weak hammer spring), so it meets Canada's non-PAL designation.... That means she doesn't need a license to own or shoot it.... To make it easy to aim in the close quarters of the cabin basement, where the range is from 6-14 feet, I mounted a green laser on the breech, as low as I could over the boreline.... Sighted at 10 feet, you can hold dead on anywhere in the basement, put the green dot on where you want to hit and squeeze....

I started out with the cable ties, but the laser could wander sideways on the flat top of the receiver, so I milled a shallow 1/4" wide groove to position it, and added a hose clamp for extra rigidity.... It now holds POI perfectly.... We can't wait to let her try it out and increase her kills from the 4 she has with the PCP....

Nice~ TBH, IMO, with the green laser beam, should make it a multi shot repeater in stead of a single shot pumper~

It would be nice, but keeping it under 500 fps (because we don't need more, besides being non-PAL), it didn't make sense to build another PCP (and I wasn't going to give up mine to modify).... CO2 could do the job, but the gun will only be used occasionally, so a good chance it would be empty just when you needed it.... At least a pumper ALWAYS works, but not much point making it into a repeater though.... So far, she has pretty much been one shot - one kill anyways.... I don't think the Packrats can figure out what we are, and why we are in their basement den.... they just sit there and look at you....

If it works, it's not stupid. I made kind of the same gun.

Chose pumper because as you said.. They always work.

What about something like this, but with a low profile snap in dovetail adapter.

Even with the lowest rings, the laser would still be higher than it is now.... The lower it sits, the less the POI changes relative to the laser dot at different distances (at these close ranges).... A side offset just compounds the problem, IMO....

You can’t buy a single airgun for everything. Golfers use many different clubs, airgunners need more than one gun

I had a few different ways to mount it higher, using adapters, rings, and the special mount that came with the laser.... but I wanted to keep it as close to the bore line as possible to avoid "parallax errors" between the bore and the laser with the super short ranges involved.... The laser beam is only 0.8" above the center of the bore....

The cabin is only 14' x 20', and the basement is a bit smaller than that.... so the typical range to target is 5-10 feet, and a long shot would be 15 ft.... .... By keeping the laser as low as I did, and sighting at 10 feet, the POI stays within about 3/8" of the laser dot between 5-15 ft.... .... With a conventional scope mount, it would change by twice that amount....

That is true.. Tested my setup, 5ft and 15ft is different POI. it's a good couple inches.
