I inherited a rifle like the one listed in this post: topic3006.html

It came with a can of Marksman brand pellets and it fires well. I bought a can of Crosman 177s and every 2-3-4 shots jam, usually very close to the breech. The inside of the barrel looks fine. Previously it was properly stored and not abused. Are newer pellets simply larger than older ones or is this just a batch issue? When inserting the Crosman I can feel that they fit more tightly, usually when the pellet is 2/3 to 3/4 inserted.

The Marksman pellets have are more cylindrical, with a flat head and sides. The sides of the head have ridges along the direction o travel. The Crosman are more of a dome shape and are overall smooth.

For search purposes the markings on the barrel are
Universal Firearms Corp Hialeah FLA No 15
MFG IJEVSK USSR Air Rifle Mod IU 22 Cal 177

Hi and welcome on the forum ElBerto!

What you have inherited is well known as a Baikal IJ22 rifle. It was made under a few brand names through the 60's and 70's IIRC. These rifle often (if not always) came with a leather main piston seal, which I suspect may be dry on yours. It also had a leather breech seal at the entry of the barrel, where you insert the pellet. You can try restoring the power by lightly oiling the seals with silicone, neatsfoot or SAE30 non-detergent engine oil. Two or three drops on the main seal and a drop on the breech seal, let it soak for at least 24 hrs with the rifle buut down and you should be good to go.

Merci Airmec! I will now spend the rest of the weekend Youtubing.

What I don't understand is why the Marksman No 1s work well, while the Crosman don't. They are all 177s, no? Is it that brand X might traditionally make loads marginally larger than others? This is all new to me, just trying to learn.

I was with friends a few weeks ago. Shooting another, unknown rile we shot 1000-1500 pellets and had maybe 5 jams. I don't know which pellet(s) were used.

Of course I can Google, but People are more reliable, do you know of a Marksman, or U22 rebuild kit dealer?

Yes they are all .177 pellets, but due to manufacturing tolerances in pellets and barrels, different weigth, and even different sizes in .177 caliber (4.52, 4.53, 4.54mm etc), results will vary. Even using the same pellet in two air rifles of the same exact model may give rather different results. This is the classical search for the ''perfect pellet'' :wink: .

I am not aware of any particular dealer for leather seals for this rifle, but you can check on ebay. However these seals are easy to make by yourself. Just do a little search for ''making a leather seal for an air rifle''. I made quite a few for my own oldies, easy job if you're handy :) .

Thanks again or your input. I will certainly look in to the rebuild process.

Went to Sail and picked up some Daisy and Stoeger pellets and both shoot fine, so no more Crosman for me.
