Based on my understanding of the rules, in that points are earned even for face hits, it would be concieveable that just about any pellet gun could potentially achieve a 'score'.

Would you be 'competitive' with a 1077, maybe, maybe not. If you guage your overall sucess by multiplying your final score, by the fun you had; I'd suggest the 1077 might be a very suitable 'starting' gun.

I like that HFT is structured to be very 'beginner friendly'. With the 'face hit' allowance, I'd have fun shootin a pumper, with open sights.

I have shot a 1077, and I would have to say it would be a very poor choice if you want to have any chance of hitting anything.
The trigger on that rifle is easily the worst I have ever felt (and I have shot a lot of cheap airguns)
The CO2 system is very inconsistent which makes accuracy very poor (IMO) Power drops off very quickly which is going to make your point of impact change on practically every shot.
If you want to try HFT on an extremely tight budget I would suggest something like a QB.

I got one today, my "range" is only 5 meters, on that short distance it's accurate and fun to shoot 12 times in a row. Will try longer distances @ my parents this spring.

The trigger performs good, the stages can be felt very good, but I've never shot an expensive airgun.

It's underpowered for hunting, it's a plinker 8)

Even with a QB in .22 you'd be better off than using a 1077 IMO.
