CROSMAN has a new Challenger out.

D&L did nothing to introduce a new rifle. They are merely carrying it as part of the Crosman lineup.

credit where credit is due!

The Challenger PCP has been out for a year now- no one typically bothers listing it on Canadian websites as a PAL is required and it's not cheap (although it is lower now than it was previously). When the original Challenger (2000) was being sold at $500.00 virtually no one bought it.

As with many second prototypes the quirks and shortcomings most noted in the first prototype have been addressed. That beautiful Lothar Walther barrel should never have its crown exposed naked to the cruel world. The bolt was problematic and I see they have left the rubber cup off of the rear sight (it does get in the way). The improvements in the gas system probably address the somewhat delicate probe that pierced the powerlets on the first version.

If Crosman wants to be a player in ISSF and other shooting events they have to acknowledge that they have so far been making remarkably nasty triggers. (Why it's enough to make a fella cut up his wedding ring to make trigger shoes  ) This one no doubt is an improvement...in fact....even though I have yet to squeeze the new one....there is no doubt in my mind at all.

All of that having been said I have to admit that my version one Challenger is a nice accurate target gun. If they weren't charging too much over $300 then OK but I would tend to buy my grandson a Daisey 853c or 888 instead.

My main negative criticism of the gun is this.....if you have a "four pounder" cannon (say like the one's on the sloop Antelope of Barrett's Privateers fame http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-PQbdmQRwc)

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. So a shot that sends a four pound ball 100 ft (400foot pounds) sends a 200 pound cannon backwards 2 feet ....or a 400 pound cannon 1 foot...and so on until the cannon hardly moves at all.

This was Crosman's engineering strategy in recoil dampening on this gun. They perched that beautiful Lothar Walther barrel on top of the biggest heaviest chunk of plastic I have ever seen used on a gun. Doesn't seem terribly sophisticated to me. And the stock is actually painful to hold with your left hand.

So I have it perched on a nice hand rest. I think I will get a butt hook for it and use it as a trainer for 50 meter.
