I found the Crosman 2250XT (.22) on the Crosman website but they only ship to the US. I am very interested in getting this model or a similar model but my local stores here in Winnipeg (Cabela's, Wholesale Sport, Canadian Tire, Walmart) don't carry any of the "backpacker" type models.

I am willing to order and ship online if shipping prices aren't too extreme. I am also willing to buy used, but I have not found anything yet.

Does anyone have any advice?

Eric at scopes and ammo should be able to help you out.

http://scopesandammo.com/storefront/index.php

I "think" (can't remember for sure) he even sells a conversion kit for the 22xx. See what he says.

Wow, that was a quick reply!

Yes, it appears he sells the 2289g backpacker, a pump style gun. I am not sure if I want the pump style or the air source CO2 style gun (what the 2250XT is). Can you or anyone help me decide what is right for me?

I want this gun for backpacking and shooting small game like rabbits and prairie chicken. I imagine the CO2 gun will be louder but I can imagine that pumping a gun 10 times between shots would be annoying, time consuming and tiring.

What do you think? (And is the 2250XT even an option here in Canada?)

The 2250 is considered a handgun in Canada, regardless of whether it has a stock attached or not.... Since it is listed in the Crosman advertising at over 500 fps that make is a Restricted Firearm requiring an RPAL.... and you are only allowed to shoot it at an approved pistol range.... and must have a special permit to even transport it to the range and back....

Since the market for the 2250 in Canada would be so limited, nobody imports them....

Hmm, ya I was aware that 500+fps requires a PAL, but the Crosman 1389 pump action rifle is rated for 550fps and I was told by Wholesale Sports that no PAL is required for it http://ca.wholesalesports.com/storefront/recreational-shooting/air-rifles/backpacker-1389-set-co2-single-shot-bolt-action-rifle/prod74874.html.

I just thought that since they use the lightest piece of crap pellets to achieve their highest rating... anyway, I'll take what you said as true.

What about other "backpacker" style rifles, like the 2400 or 2300? How good is the 2289g in the lineup? Is there a backpacker that uses CO2 instead of pump that is under 500fps?

The 2400 is under 500 fps and so although it is considered a handgun doesn't need a PAL.... However, at over 500 fps it would require an RPAL.... A 14" barrel would put a stock 2400 over.... with a 10" barrel it would be close....

"2400" is a Crosman Custom Gun shop model- not shipped anywhere but within the U.S.

As for the Wholesale Sports link- something is seriously wrong there: #1- the 1389 has not been made in 9 years, #2 it was not a Co2 gun- it was a pumper, #3 if it was rated at 550fps- it would be considered a "firearm" in Canada.

The 2289 works the same way as the 1377 which has a different power plant then the 2240 .

Eric, Correct me if I am wrong because I do intend to buy the components from you as soon as my summer renovation guilt is satisfied.

If you start with a 2240 pistol....the basic platform from which the marvels of our creative members start...and you get one of your 2250 conversion kits....and.....MOST IMPORTANTLY....do not exceed a 14 inch barrel length (unlike what they do at the US Crosman site) ....then you have not exceeded the Canadian gun control edicts.

Just as an aside...I initially deeply resented these edicts and to some degree I still do....but rough fair....they are as fair as fair gets.

The barrel length is not the governing factor.... the velocity is.... If you exceed 500 fps you need an RPAL.... If you modify a 2240 in any way you better check it with a Chrony, with standard weight pellets, up to at least 75*F.... maybe higher.... You want to make darn sure that if it is ever tested it stays below 500 fps....

understood Bob, My point is that the 2250 that exceeds the edict by 40 fps is 18 inches long. My question was does the 14 inch barrel keep it under 500 fps....it's as reasonable as slightly reducing the size of the shot port or the volume of the shot chamber.

I have never tried a 14" barrel on a 2240.... but from what I have read, the 10" is usually OK.... but the 14" may be over 500 fps.... particularly in warm weather.... It would be a simple matter to limit the velocity to under 500 fps, however.... The easiest and most efficient method is to clip a couple of coils from the hammer spring until you are satisfied that the velocity is consistently under 500.... The added benefit of this is that the shot count will go up significantly....

You MUST have a Chrony to do these mods and stay legal....
