A bit of bummer news out of the Elmira Rod & Gun Club ....

"The Elmira Rod and Gun club is not longer interested in allowing Field Target shooting, so all matches there are cancelled."

"It's too bad this is the outcome. I and a few others tried our best to keep it going, but the club's executive do not want FT at Elmira and worked against us to stop it."

A big "Thanks" to the fellows for trying to keep the FT portion of the club active. Unfortunately they were faced with too much resistance and all matches at the Elmira Rod & Gun Club have been cancelled ...

As far as I know, there is nothing related to FT happening at Elmira, period.

I think that we should all email the club and express our dissatisfaction. I think that their attitude is very shortsighted considering that FT brought in a minimum of $6000.00 annually in revenues for the club not to mention the fact that at least 7 regular FT shooters are full paid members there, including myself.

the only email address on their contact page is: webmaster@elmirarodandgun.org

Here is the text of my email to them:

I am writing to express my extreme dissatisfaction with the obstructive nature of the way FT has been treated at the club. As host to the first field target club in Canada, Elmira rod and gun should be proud to support the efforts of CAFTA, now internationally recognized as the governing group for FT in Canada by the 26 member nations that make up the world FT body.

I conservatively estimate that FT brought $6000.00 in revenues annually to Elmira, and this does not include the 7 regular FT shooters that are full paid members of the Elmira rod and gun club. I myself joined despite the distance from my home because I felt that I should support Elmira for holding FT competitions. In fact other than organized FT competitions I doubt if I use the club more than 2 or 3 times per year.

Ted Gibson.

So from that, am I correct in understanding that it was the club's executive that put the kibosh on FT activities all along, and not the CFO as we were led to believe?

It has been brought to my attention that the revenues from FT were much less than $6000.00 annually. However for a club that is Pursuing new membership, to alienate a group of shooters and the funds thay bring seems ridiculous.

$6,000 was the approximate amount that the club has been paid for rental of their range to hold FT matches since 1996. They charge $150 per day. Approximating 4 matches there per year is $600 per year, over 10 years (even though it has actually been 14 years) is where the $6,000 figure comes from.

That is really disappointing news. Elmira was a good venue for FT & I'm glad I got the chance to shoot a few matches there & meet the regular locals that attended FT there. Really sorry to hear this news, it's just a shame, really. :(

I guess them guys didn't think FT was worth having around..

Tim, I know the club I shoot at has an archery range, do you want me to ask the owner if he'd be interested in letting you guys setup matches out there? I know you already have a place in Niagara to shoot but at least it might give you another location to set up matches other than port colborne.

just an idea..

Thanks for the offer Pete.

Since the locations would only be about 15 minutes apart, doing all that work to cut lanes and make shooting boxes when we have already done all that is not really something I want to get into.

The guys in the Toronto/Mississauga area are working on some ideas; we'll see what comes of that. It would be nice if I could attend a match as a shooter once in a while and not have to be responsible for running the match. For me, an average match involves six to eight hours of preparation at the club, so once a month is plenty.

Yes, definitely a disappointment. Thanks to all the guys that worked so hard on this! Your efforts are appreciated.

Tim, to your comment about work in the Mississauga/Toronto area. I'm in the area, interested and available to help. Not sure if it's better handled in a PM or a new string but would you or the Mississauga / Toronto folks share what is being done?
