BENJAMIN SHERIDAN TRAIL NP ALL WEATHER .22caL , <500fps

Somewhere around 2006, I started missing the old airguns I had to give away...y’know, the old fellas like:

-My Crosman A.I.R.17,
-That SWEET CO2 Crosman UZI, with the folding stock....(the big one)
-A Daisy BB pistol, (the all metal one with the right handed-grip forged right in...)
Some pumpers,

And some weird “break barrel” gun with some name like “Balki”....or something like that...thing kicked like a mule, and drove .177 pellets a hell of a long way...... funny enough, super accurate, as well.....
Had to give them all away.....but that’s another tale......

So in 2007, I got a tax return in my favour from 2006, and bought a Quest 500 from the local Canadian Tire, on a whim.
I thought it was far and away, a vast improvement on the BB/pellet guns I’d grown up with, and, WOW!, a 4X scope!
Whoopee!!!

I thought it was the best thing going!
I knew it wasn’t a “target” gun, (I’d seen proper target guns before, and I was well sure that this wasn’t one).
But, I had a solid shooting foundation, as my Dad was an Air Cadet in the 70’s, and taught me how to shoot, and we shot our little .22 matches almost weekly until I was 10,
Also, (I think), being an Army Reservist from ’06 through ’09, got me some decent shoulder time.
So, I thought the Quest was pretty damn good for $165.......

We’d haul ‘er out at family gatherings, and hole up some cans, have little competitions to see who could hit an empty can at thirty meters...all fun stuff.

Then I found an online forum.........

And I learned that while the Quest is not a waste of time.........there are some damn sweet “entry-level” guns out there.

So I read...
And read...
And researched.....
And read.

And, discovered that I WANT A BENJAMIN SHERIDAN .22 NITRO PISTON with the ALL WEATHER STOCK...
So, I search, and research.....and comb the various forums and online reviews......

And still think I WANT A BENJAMIN SHERIDAN .22 NITRO PISTON with the ALL WEATHER STOCK.
So....I take the dive, and start shopping around.

Canadian Tire has it!.....$399.95.....eeh!....pricey.
So where else?

I start looking at this forum I just joined, (and haven’t contributed to)....
There appears to be a fella selling the SAME DAMN GUN for a hundred bucks less....

So I check him out...order some pellets...
Order looks good.....got what I paid for in good time.......and he’s got the
BENJAMIN SHERIDAN .22 NITRO PISTON with the ALL WEATHER STOCK......for $269.99...still leery...
BUT I ORDER IT....

And I get it......
And I get it into the house...
“It’s so good....once it hits your lips, it’s so good!”....to borrow a quote.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7SuY3T_U6c

What an airgun.....I had a great experience right out of the box.

As I have said before, the heft and feel of this airgun was perfect,.........not real accurate...but, it’s a new airgun, it’s expected....dieseled like a mofo......but this was right outta the box...not an issue at all.

Now, I’m not a “lube & tune” guy, and I did not stay at a Holiday Inn last night, but I had to take ‘er out of the stock, (to void my warranty, if nothing else).....everything was oily and slick as a mofo....but IMO, that’s a good thing, so I wiped it down, tightened whatever screws I could find, tightened the trigger screw down, and threw it back together.....
(Had to paint the stock, and attach Weaver rail, though.)......LCF, nothing more.....

And I shot....
And read...
And researched.....
And read.
And shot some more.

This airgun is so, so, damn good....I like it so much, I should marry it...
Found the pellets it likes, (.22 Benjamin HP’s),
I’ve got about 1500 down the pipe so far...still dieseling, but better, and the accuracy is getting better DAILY.
Ended up extending the butt, (I’m 6’3”), and have ape arms.......looks like poop, but works!
Whenever I’ve put his gun (& scope) in someone’s hands, they can shoot it.
The pellets go where they are supposed to go.....

Long story long, it’s a budget airgun that delivers...IN SPADES.
Take it to a field target match against PCP’s?.....you might lose.
For my money, and time, a great gun and I do not regret one cent of the purchase.

I LOVE THIS GUN.

Hammer Sandwich.

I really love mine, it would be one of the first one to be replaced if they we're ever to be lost.

Hammer Sandwich, from a fellow Benny owner let me say great review. I had not thought to try the Benny hp pellets but will now. My Trail NP likes RWS superpoints, JSB Exacts, and the Daystate rangemasters. One of my faves for sure.

I'm in the exact same boat, it's just been a great gun so far.

I actually got 'er out to the cabin this weekend...and the sweetness continued.

Set up some targets, and backed out to 40meters.
A few on the paper, a few clicks to adjust, and I was IN BUSINESS.

I'm getting just about the same "relative" accuracy I do at 10m, at 40m (easily minute of spoon).

One really strange thing I noticed, though, is when I took the gun out, the barrel wouldn't break.
And I mean, I had to wail on the thing to get 'er open....the heel of my hand is still tender.

I hadn't done anything to the gun, except for cleaning the evening prior, (drop of oil down the chamber, borebrush/borebrush/borebrush, and about a dozen swabs).

It was locked up hard, and dieseling like crazy again.
And by that, I mean I blew a fat puff of smoke out of the barrel between each shot, (about the size of half a cigarette exhale). Didn’t affect accuracy at all, (as far as I could tell).

But after about 200 rds, she went back to normal.
Does anyone have any clue why the barrel locked up so damn bad?

(I know the smoke’s probably from the drop of "Crosman Love sauce", but the barrel not wanting to break?
I’m mystified.

Thanks,
HS

Jeez, I tell ya, the BJ's are sugar-sweet.....I just bought them from Eric cause they looked cool, and were on sale.

And I hope to God he don't run out before I get more money..... :D

I haven't tried any of those other pellets, but I'd really like to get some RWS & JSB pellets, as it seems every second shooter on here gets great results from them.

:axe:
(sorry, my kid wanted to put a smiley on)

Yeah, not sure if Eric has them on sale as clearance or not. Hope he stocks them continuously as they are a good pellet. I picked up 3 tins from him at the Waterdown show for my AR2078 but I will try them out with the Benny now. Hope Eric doesn't see this post and raises the price on those pellets!
Not sure about your barrel lock up! The only issue I had was with the plastic barrel washers. My POI kept changing on me and I thought I had scope creep or barrel droop for awhile. Once I replaced the plastic with metal washers I have not had an issue since. (knock on wood). I would buy one again, and the fact that parts are easy to get helps as well.

Definitely crossing my fingers on that!

I've read about this alot, and about how folks change 'em out, but I still have no idea what people are talking about...
I downloaded the "blown up" drawing, and still don't know.

I actually had the thing apart again, and couldn't find anywhere on the "forward assembly hinge-bits" to take something out, (is there a screw on it?)

The screw where the barrel assembly is attached to the tube. It is almost hidden by the stock! You should find very small washers (sorry forgot the size) between barrel pivot and tube. Hope that made sense. Several members have not had this issue though but keep an eye on it as it took about a year before mine acted up. There have been complaints of loss of power due to the gas leaking from the ram itself but I have not had this happen at all.

I'm gonna go put a few Benny hps thru her now. :D

Yep..
But don't take it apart or you may cause issue with it. If it ain't broken...
