It is not uncommon the shooter make a mistake, this video shows the difference between a direct hit and a hit with ricochet.
Even losing power is a shot that can do much damage.

You do have to think about ricochets. Friend of mine caught an inside-out 300gr. from his .375H&h on his belt buckle - rebounding off a curved 1" piece of armor plate that was only about 20 yards distance. He thought it might go through. That 300gr. Sierra BTSpitzer, impacting at over 2,500fps made a 1" lead splash on the plate, rebounded and smacked him hard. His legs gave out, putting him in sitting position, then he vomited. His curved sheet steel belt buckle was dished backwards. Good thing he was wearing it as that chunk of lead and copper might have not stopped until it got to his spine. He says the thought of that is what made him sick.
Be careful - it's a jungle out there.

Here's an interesting one...when shooting at a crow perched behind a tree limb, the pellet struck the limb and was deflected into the bird.
