I have a few projects on the go that need me to machine some bolt handles.

I have made one from 303 stainless....really easy to machine I found.. The trouble with the 303 is I find it scratches very easily after it has been polished.

Can someone recommend a stainless that is a bit more scratch resistant, polishes up nice, but is still easy easy to machine??

I think your looking for a golden egg, Nathan? You are probably using 303A(Annealed) which machines pretty nice if you can run over 3000rpm and about .006 feed per revolution.

We machine, on the lathe, some pretty "tough" and "hard" stainless steels. BUT they are hard to machine! Unless metals get a protective coating, they scratch. Hard chrome is one the best coatings out there for guns. Comes in black or chrome, at least it used to, probably more colours available now.

Guns get bumped and scratched unless they are wall-hangers!

You could try inconel. (718)
Use HSS bits and set your RPM very low and feed relatively high.
Very low as in 3-400.... Or you'll be sad :)
It's a little over twice as hard as 303.

But the trade off is inconel is pure misery to machine. But doable.
