I have both and believe the CP88 to be quieter. There is not rear gas discharge or slide noise from the blow back.
I can get them both in the same room and compare on the weekend.

I don't want to impose, but if it's not too inconvenient I would appreciate the feedback.

The only guns I have to go by are the 1377 and the PX4. Pyramyd Air rates them both as 3-medium, and the 1377 is definitely quieter than the PX4 to my ears. They also rate the CP88 as 3 as well.

If I could hijack my own thread for a moment, with something more appropriately 'mod' related, I have another question.

Why is a longer barrel (assumed to be) more accurate than a shorter one? I can see where a longer barrel would give more velocity because the air is pushing on the pellet longer. But once a pellet has traveled a few inches (say 4" for example) I would think it's direction would be already established and it's spin already induced. Going farther in a barrel, say 10", would hardly make the bullet go straighter or spin differently, at least as I see it. Obviously I'm wrong but why?

Thanks for those links. I guess there aren't any original questions any more... :)

At least I wasn't as far off base as I thought.

Good links. There are lots of secondary affects though depending how much you want to get into it. There's a world of difference between peak accuracy that a barrel can give when the gun is locked down in a vise compared with average accuracy that can be achieved shooting offhand. A longer barrelled gun will tend to be more stable because of the longer moment arms and generally higher overall weight. It's one of the reasons that muzzle weights can help. And for open sights, the longer sight radius is often a help. On the other side of the equation, a longer barrel means the pellet spends more time in the gun after the shot is released which can make trigger control and follow through very critical, particularly in low speed pellet pistols.

Short barrelled pistols are more pointy which can make it quicker to acquire target(s), so for any sort of moving target or action shooting event you probably don't want to be waving an 18 incher around :)

But stepping back a bit, for a gas pistol the main thing about barrel length is the increased efficiency, so for a given fps you can get more shots per charge and less noise. I use a 12" barrel at the moment, get about 130 shots per CO2 at roughly 450 fps and fairly modest noise. The 12" is a bit unwieldy though so I'd prefer to use a 10", but so far I'm more accurate with the 12.

Jim

Ive got to put in a vote for an Alecto
Its a bit pricey but its plenty good for targets and plinking with even 1 or 2 pumps!!
I find the groups with 1 pump are the same as with 2 and 3 pumps but it just drops the POI about 1" at 10 yards, easily accounted for when aiming

Well, I went for the CP88 Competition. Ordered it yesterday morning. It was supposed to be here today but it didn't make it. If it doesn't end up being my 'ultimate' pistol I'll just have to keep on getting more of them. :D

I also ordered 3 extra magazines, the optic mounting rail and a relatively cheap green dot sight to see what they are like. (The Walther Competition II Point Sight)

As an aside, I just discovered I have another pellet pistol. About 50 years ago I bought a revolver and holster to practice my 'fast draw'. I went through a bunch of boxes that haven't been opened in three house moves and finally found it. It turned out to be a "Crosman Single Action #6" also marked "Crosman Arms Canada Ltd., Dunnville Ontario". Now that I have four guns I'll have to make a sig with a list of them. 8)
