I have Marlin that I purchased in 1968. I want to remove the stock to refinish it and the barrel assembly. Do you simply remove the two screws, one on either side near the front of the stock?

There will be another screw in the trigger guard area as well that holds down the back of the tube, simply remove these three screws and the action comes out of the stock... simple

usually its the one at the back of the trigger guard.
