Ok, so as if it isn't bad enough that amazon.ca has a much reduced catalog compared to amazon.com, amazon.com has the most bizzarre shipping restrictions I have ever come across. I noticed recently that amazon.com has really expanded their raw materials selection. Their prices on metal stock are so-so (compared to onlinemetals or metalsdepot), but their shipping prices are pretty good, so it makes a useful alternative. Shipping from onlinemetals is particularly crippling. Anyway, I need all sorts of stuff for some projects, so tried to cost it out from amazon.com. That's when I hit the bizarre shipping restrictions. I can order steel tube, but not aluminium pipe. I can order 90D imperial o-rings, but not 70D imperial. But I can order 70D in metric sizes! What on earth are they thinking???

So I'm now eagerly awaiting some M2.4 * 14.3 metric o-rings, the nearest I could find to a normal 110.

Well, irritations about what they will and won't ship aside, my package of metal and o-rings arrived from Amazon today, only 2 days after I placed the order, and without any extra charges on arrival. Shipping was about 1/2 what I would have paid from onlinemetals, and if I remember correctly I usually get dinged for additional brokerage and duties when it arrives from them. So credit where credit's due - Amazon sure know how to get stuff out the door.

Amazon uses a computer algorithm to determine what's available and what isn't. All this optimizing is how they keep the prices down.

But free shipping and no duties aren't bad at all 8)

Ah, the 'free' shipping that is promoted as you shop evaporates when you get to the checkout - apparently not available for us foreigners. Shame, now if you could get free shipping on metals that really would change the game. Perhaps if amazon.ca ever get their act together...
