Hello Everyone,

I just joined this forum after searching around for Canadian information about air guns. Looks like this'll be a great resource with friendly and helpful members.

I'm in my 60's and my passions are motorcycle touring (I currently have a BMW GS) and photography. I live on the outskirts of Montreal, right on the water and don't have very close neighbors. But sound carries incredibly far across water and I can hear hammer strikes from workmen 2-3 km away! So I'll be looking for an accurate .177 air rifle which is also as quiet as possible. Unfortunately it seems that any gun from the States with any kind of noise suppression is illegal here (like the TalonSS for example).

Anyway, I haven't been shooting in many years, but in my youth (before all kinds of gun regulations) I shot a lot with a .22 rifle. Now that's out of the question unless at a legitimate range. More recently (10 years ago or so) I had and still have a Webley Tempest pistol and a Benjamin Sheridan 397P rifle. I haven't shot either of them in 5+ years and both guns probably need some maintenance.

I don't yet have a PAL but I've signed up for one of the only English-language CFSC I could find early in January and hopefully will get my PAL soon afterwards.

Later today I'm picking up a new Canadian version Stoeger X5 with scope and case in the package. I heard the scope isn't terribly good so will be looking for recommendations for something better (budget up to about $150 or so) soon. I'm also hoping that it'll be possible to upgrade the spring in the X5 to the US version spring once I get my PAL, to bring the gun up to 800 fps from the Canadian limit of 495. Any thoughts on that?

My use of the air rifle will be 95% target shooting and general plinking, with the occasional squirrel thrown in (the little buggers have all but destroyed my tool shed!).

Cheers!

Hi and welcome, I owned 1 of the Stoeger X5`s and I ended up getting a pal version later, I don`t think it can be upgraded to a pal.

Thanks for the welcome. You bought a PAL-required version of the X5 later? Did you get it in the States? I will need to learn how difficult it might be to import a gun from the States (either personally driving it back or having it shipped) once I get my PAL in January.

I've yet to fire more than 2 or 3 shots with the X5 because I have to wait until my weekend (Sunday and Monday) in order to be able to shoot it outside. Did you find it took a lot of shots in order to get it seated in? Someone told me it takes about 100 shots, and that you shouldn't worry about accuracy or even adjusting the sights/scope until that has been done.

Cheers!

No you can buy a pal Stoeger, I think it was the x10 or 20, anyway the x5 is not upgradeable as far as I know. If you are interested in Field Target we start again in the spring.

Who is "we"? Where can I find information about Montreal Field Target groups? I'm very interested!
