If I was going to try I would start with a Dremel and Chicago Screws. Home Depot has aluminium ones, Lee Valley has brass Chicago Bolts.

It won't end up as nice as the picture I imagine, and when you factor in all your time buying it will seem like a good deal. I have spent a full day trying to do stuff that I could have bought for $30. But what fun is just buying something.

I could make them, but would have to charge $25 for brass. Would also have to source the spring from http://www.trakar.com/products/compression-springs/?page=16&OutsideDiameterMIN=0.04&OutsideDiameterMAX=3.156&SpringRateMIN=0&SpringRateMAX=1313.36&LengthMIN=0.187&LengthMAX=17.75&MaximumLoadMIN=0&MaximumLoadMAX=11911&MaximumDeflectionMIN=0&MaximumDeflectionMAX=962&WireDiameterMIN=0.006&WireDiameterMAX=2.07&order=OutsideDiameter&submitadvanced=Search&
