I noticed a 1/8 drill bit would fit perfect in the hole cut down and used as a hammer pin.

Okay to use?

I think the drill bit is too brittle. They seem to snap with just a bit of side load.

Not really sure Greg , you can try a small piece and try to break it with a couple pairs of pliers. If it holds up use it. I would however put some locktite or some sort of bonding compound to keep it in the hole.

How about a split pin, used to hold on sprockets, can get them any size and will not break.

Unless the pin is a tight fit in the hole (which makes it difficult to take out to remove the hammer) it will fall through and interfere with the spring....

The split pin is cut down the side so it is tight when driven in the hole .

They are also called spring pins, have used then in the fishing when working on my equipment.

I realize what you are talking about (spring pin).... I was making the point that it might be difficult to remove while the hammer is in the gun, which you have to do in order to remove the hammer from the tube.... Even then, there is no hole in the other side of the hammer to drive it out, and drilling one would be difficult, since the hammer is hardened....

If I was going to use a spring pin (or pressed in pin), I would cut the groove out through the back of the tube so the hammer could be removed with the pin in place.... Of course then it won't mount the rear plug / spring seat as securely....

If you can remove it with your fingers, it may gradually work down into the hammer during cocking and end up fouling the spring.... Just something to watch for....
