Greetings from southern Ontario. Brand new to the whole air gun concept. I haven't bought one yet but have lots of questions, which forum would be best to ask about whether or not I need an FAC and, on a related note, which gun to buy for pest control?

Hi. Johnster - welcome to the CAF!

You only need a PAL (as the FAC is now called) if you buy an air rifle with a muzzle velocity over 500 fps.

Depending what kind of pests (and whether it is legal in your area to kill them) you could probably get away with an air rifle shooting at very close to the 500 fps limit as long as you are close enough and accurate enough to hit them in the right place for a quick and ethical kill.

Which air rifle you would get depends a lot on your budget - as there are many of them out there that would be suitable for the task.

Springer (single shot; only need to pump it once for each shot; has recoil & vibration so may be harder to shoot accurately)
Co2 powered (can be single shot or multi-shot; no recoil; temperature dependent as it needs to keep warm to shoot at max velocity)
HPA (can be single shot or multi-shot; no recoil; not temperature dependent; needs to have an external source of HPA - either a hand pump or a scuba tank - thus is the most expensive option)
Pneumatic (mainly single shot; must be pumped up multiple times to shoot; not temperature dependent)

- lots and lots of choices!

Hi William, Thanks for the response! I think I'll open up a new thread in one of the forums to continue this.

Cheers
John
