I find something interesting today.

I shot the 2 guns one by one. And I found the pellets from the P17 penetrated into the wood deeper than the Hatsan.

P17 is rated @ 400 fps.
Hatsan Mod 25 @ 495 fps.
(I don't have a chony, but from hitting a far target, from the echo came back, obviously the Hatsan do have faster muzzle speed)

I used same pellets (mixed Crosman pointed and wadcutter).

I made several shots from each gun on different spots on the same wood pieces. The results are similar - shots from P17 penetrated into the wood about 1mm deeper than the Hatsan from 5 meter range. You can see the hole made by the P17 vs the skirt of the pellets flush on the wood surface from the Hatsan.

Anyone have some idea about this?Image

I'm sure a chrony would verify but it's obvious to me your p17 shoots at a higher velocity than the hatsan. I wouldn't trust what is written on the box explicitly.

That's what I think too...

but then I test shoot a farther target, about 20 meters ?! I can hear the pellet shot from the Hatsan reach the target faster than the P17.... so maybe the fps not as described on the box, but Hatsan do have a faster muzzle speed I think...

Umm. .. I have one more question about the springer... for rating at 495fps, is that any chance for a very weak and no maintenance but NOT broken yet spring will shoot under 300fps ? (Just make a worst scenario)

The P17 is shooting under 400fps. I doubt mine is so good and lucky to reach that goal. And I am not using the very light weight pellet, so I think my P17 is shooting around 350fps... so I doubt if it's caused by the muzzle speed, the Hatsan has to shoot ubder 300 fps ...

If we can prove the P17 also has a very good penetrating design, it's another bonus to own the P17/HW40/P3 right ?

Well it could be like a drill. Slower speed cuts metal better than faster.

Maybe the faster shooting pellet gun is mushrooming more so it not penetrating much. Maybe it just hit a softer spot in the wood.

Unless you got a chrony no way of really knowing.

No way the P17 is shooting faster than the Model 25, unless its got a bad seal.

Buy a Chrony. If you tune airguns its a good investment. Also good for checking to see if airguns are working as they should.

All your questions could be answered with a chrony.

Like I said I don't think shooting wood is a good test. Too many factors.

Did you shoot at the same angle, is it the same density. Did you hit a knot

The drilling theory looks reasonable... especially I am shooting very close to the wood and the bigger energy from the Hatsan just changed the shape of the pellet while it touched the wood, so finally blocking it to go deeper...

I will think about a chony~ I think it's useful more and more while I adding more guns to my collection...

I tested about 10 shots each gun on the same wood piece on different spots. All shots from the P17 went deeper than the Hatsan except one that just hit on other pellet in the wood by accident (I want to say I aimed it, but it's not true~ lol)

YY,

The chronograph has many useful features, the least of which is an important diagnostic instrument! If you want\need to know how your air guns and ammo selections are performing, then a chrono can be an invaluable evaluation tool for new, used, and modified pistols\rifles!!

Although I use a Competition Electronics Pro Chrono Pal w\indoor light system ($140), THIS Caldwell complete kit has been on sale in the past for just $100...light kit, tripod and carry case all included! 8)

MERRY CHRISTMAS to You and Your Families!!!

Ted

Thanks Ted!

I put this set into my Amazon shopping cart already. It's asking 140 free shipping right now... hope I would have a chance to see it drop to 100 before I really can't wait to buy it for the original price ~ [emoji16]

I took my brand new P17 out of the box and had to get the piston un stuck. It would not lift up.

I avg 395 FPS. Not bad for something that says only 410 on the box. I got some 8.2 RWS and some 8.3 Grizzlys Ill test tomorrow.

I def want to get the slide extension.
