Hello All!

I was out doing a little FT last weekend with my AA S510 Xtra, and noticed at the lowest power setting a very substantial reduction in velocity / power -my pellets were dropping at least a foot below the target @ 40 yards -has anyone Chrony'd this rifle? My experience suggests the lowest power setting on my 510 is pretty much useless -I think my sling shot could do better. At higher settings the Air Arms does a fine job of hitting the target. Just curious if other members have had similar results or if it's an issue with my particular rifle.

Cheers!

Avianmanor

AA S510 .22 Xtra Fac fps, various pellets and power wheel settings. Rifle is factory stock, with no modifications or tuning. Numbers listed in order of power wheel increase; low (-), middle, high (+):

-JSB
- 13.43 gr = 550, 866, 990
- 18.1 gr = 494, 779, 899

-H&N
- Baracuda Match (21.3 gr) = 849 (tested high, only)
- FTT Green (9.56 gr) = 619, 953, 1077

I know my Kral lowest setting is 608 FPS with 8.3s ( 177 ) and I noticed a POI drop, than saying having it on med power ( 800s ) I'm seeing the difference in drops at 20m. So if those numbers are right and almost 500 FPS, I would think it would drop short.

Thanks Leadslinger,

Good to know. I suspect my S510 on its lowest power setting is well below your measured 494 FPS - even my old non PAL Benjamin Springer puts it to shame. You know something’s not quite right when a drop like that occurs over such s short distance, and half your pellets are bouncing off the plywood backstop. I suppose it’s time for me to invest in a decent Chronometer and check it myself.

Hey, how ‘bout a review on your new Kral?

Cheers!

Those ain't my measured numbers. Just what I found on GTA that might help you. Chronys are great to have in these cases.

As for the review on the Kral, just been busy and haven't been a non substantial windy day for accuracy test.

My S510 FAC in walnut (same gun, obviously just a different stock) when turned down to it’s lowest setting is hitting an average of 382fps. I did not expect a full power gun to be reduced that much at its lowest setting. I found its consistency unusable at that lowest setting and have to turn it up to just under 500fps for it to get proper groups. Maybe if I experimented more with various lighter pellets there could be a magic pellet that works well at the lowest setting.

Sounds as though yours would be in the same ballpark based on your observations?

Thanks for that accurate info Fishguy!

382 FPS sounds about right, not a very useful velocity on the S510's lowest setting. I wonder if a mod can be done to tweak it up a little?

Cheers!

Here what I noticed when I played with my power wheel. Mind you this is 177.

Lowest power setting means less power doesn't it?
Sorry but I can't see what the problem is, if you buy a fast car and only drive it in first gear you aren't going to get peak performance are you?
If you don't like the low power setting then don't use it.

If you want to use the lower setting try some ultra light pellets to keep the FPS higher.
That setting may be useful for back garden plinking or pest control in barns at short range.

Not really useful though at 380fps unless just plinking in the basement I guess. Even with light pellets that's not enough power to humanely kill a bird imo. I'd be digging into it to get the low end around 500fps or so anyway. =)

Technically yes. You mean buy a fast car and only drive under the speed limit and never open it up? Because you're not going to get far in first gear in ANY car. Low power setting I find is nice for the 20ft basement, don't need to always shoot 20 FPE in my case.

I think it was more wondering why it was dropping so low. And didn't realize it shot that low FPS. My lowest setting on my gun is still 600 FPS. So in a 22 It should be hovering around 500. But his FX only shooting around 360 FPS is very low.

And light weight pellets suck. Wind blows them around too much.

Exactly. As per my OP: "Just curious if other members have had similar results or if it's an issue with my particular rifle."

Member Fishguy's Chrony figure of 382 FPS confirms it is the normal operation of this .22 calibre version of the rifle. For comparison's sake, the lowest power setting on my FX Streamline is over 500 FPS, which is a useful velocity -one must therefore wonder why Air Arms would dial it down so low to the point where it becomes almost useless.

Have any members experience with modifications to raise the lowest setting on the AA up a little? Unlike the FX, the AA does not have distinct detents for various power levels, making it very difficult to reproduce a given velocity once the setting has been changed -has anyone come up with a mod to create distinct "lock in" positions on the power adjustment knob?

It's kind of nice to be able to drive your high performance car within city limits once in a while, and then open it up on the highway, when the need arises. You'll pass more gas stations that way as well.

Cheers,

Avianmanor

Sorry meant AA. Does the power wheel have notches? Like this

Image

You could chrony and mark different increments. Seems like mine pretty constant as long as I put it around the same spot.

Hey Leadslinger,

Thanks for the photo and suggestions. The markings on my power adjuster are a little different as per photo.
