Regarding the recent discussion of a over powered Air Hawk shoots over 500fps out of the box... I want to ask some legal / police questions....

What will happen if I don't know it (I don't have a chrony and will never know about that, right?) and the police catch you about it?

They will send the gun to inspect?

And you will be charged? For what? And the potential result would be?

without a PAL, cannot one shoot a firearm if they are 'under the direct and immediate supervision of a properly licensed adult' ??

so.....

aren't we all-good as soon as the cop shows up?

Yes you can shoot with a licensed firearm owner.

FYI not all police officers have firearm licences.

Joke all you want. No PAL and caught with a PAL rated airgun. RCMP dont hold back. You be in a world of legal issues.. All over an airgun.

So either get a chrony and tune approperate, or hush.

Not worth the risk. Get a Pal. On the other side they may just look up what the manufacturer rated it as. But again why the risk?

Actually once you are going for the PAL, it's easier to get your R.PAL at the same time together and better than get it in a later date when needed....

I'm not a lawyer, but I'm going to play the Devil's Advocate here.... If these are the circumstances:

1. You bought a non-PAL rated airgun from a company that stated such (eg. on the box)….

2. You didn't modify it in any way (VERY IMPORTANT)....

3. For some strange reason the RCMP seized the gun and tested it and found it to be over 500 fps (see below)....

4. They checked the FRT list to find out if it was non-PAL or non-Restricted (which would be their duty)….

5. The gun was listed in the FRT as under 500 fps, so they examined it for modifications and found none (also their duty)….

6. They charged you anyways with possession of a firearm without a PAL (and why would the Crown Prosecutor even consider this? )….

7. It went to court, and you stated you bought it as a non-PAL airgun and never modified it....

Does anyone REALLY believe you would ever be convicted?.... I sure don't.... However, more than likely the reason the RCMP even looked at your airgun in the first place was because you were doing something ILLEGAL with it to make them go looking to "throw the book at you" in the hopes that something would stick....

If for some reason I came to realize that a non-PAL airgun in my possession was over 500 fps I would do one of the following....

1. Return it to the manufacturer and demand a refund.... OR....

2. Get my PAL and keep my mouth shut until I had it.... JMHO....

Bob

Do yourself a big favor by purchasing a Chrony and attaining your PAL & RPAL down the road as it'll open up a lot of options for you. Having a "Illegal Possession of a firearm" charge will have some serious consequences if you get caught.

As Bob says.

Also, there would need to be a reason why the police would be interested.

I had an Airhawk that shot 527FPS out of the box from Walmart. Was dieseling and once that was gone it went down. It is still so close to 500fps that I keep a trigger lock on it.

Just curious, has anyone ever heard of a case of charges laid for a pal air rifle and no pal. How about anyone actually even having an airgun checked by police period
