Surprised there is no sticky if these are so modable. Anyway, thinking of getting the QB78S in 177 - how hard is it to get more power/fps out of it?

Not hard! Are you buying the pal version? Anyway the really easy mod is just taking the transfer port seal out and replacing it with a crosman 1322 seal from gravel Agency or Canada shooting supply. Or you can make one out of icemaker tubing from the hardware store.

I would start with the PAL version, Wes. I think I have some of those seals.

Good deal!
Depending what velocity you want, you can speed things further by really tearing into things and getting the valve out and removing the fiber filter and cutting some slots in the sides of the front half of the valve to allow more co2 to enter the valve area quickly when shooting. This increases velocity quite a bit too. You'll need to keep the piercing pin in the valve and not cut out the center that holds it unless you plan on doing bulk filling co2, which maybe you are?

Here's an example of the valve mod.
You can also drill the holes in the bolt probe bigger and drill the port hole in barrel to match your valve port hole among other things. Hopefully the crosman seal is all you need! Saves a lot of work, but maybe you enjoy that too =)
Cutting a few coils off the hammer spring may seem to be the opposite of what you want, but you should be able to cut some off with losing any gained velocity, and also get way more shots at the same time. The hammer spring it comes with is way overpowered for co2Image

Thanks Wes, I looked into the seal replacement and found it was a full take apart job so was about to ask what else was worth considering with that in mind but you have already said!
I am used to snipping the hammer spring from the 1740 mods.

If you decide to take the valve out a 1/2" steel bar or a really long flat screwdriver works well to loosen the front half of the valve. This makes it much easier to push the valve out the front of the tube as the valve pushes the oring really tight against the wall of the tube when tight. You also can push the valve back in with it not tightened up, then put the retaining screw in the back half of the valve and use your bar or screwdriver to tighten the front half of your valve back up to seal things.

I know a lot of people do that but for me the point is to avoid HPA. I wouldn't bother with that route, would just get a PCP in that case.

The QB78 mod info is really spread out over this and other forum websites.
Try an google IMAGE search to lead you to the best forum pages.

Here is a good one to start with; removing the fur ball (LOL)
https://www.airgunnation.com/topic/qb78 ... -fur-ball/

You want mods for more power with CO2 powerlets.
I did that, but the power was only there on a hot day.

I also found the inconsistent velocity too frustrating for target shooting.
ie shoots high, shoots on target, shoots low. And jumps around too.

What good is big hitting power if your not sure where the pellet is going to hit? I converted my QB78 to HPA via regulated bottle to get power AND consistency.
I read that having a larger CO2 tank, like an 88g or tethered 5lbs tank, improves the velocity consistency too.

Compared to the new regulated Benjamin Marauder at $700CDN, a converted QB78 on HPA costs under $300.
That makes it good and cheap but not fast as you have to collect all the bits.
The Marauder is good and fast (to get) but it's not cheap.

I look at the QB78 (and 22xx) as 'hobbie guns'. We mod them because the act of modding is the fun part. The the further the better, cuz its more fun that way. I still want a new Marauder for Christmas though!
