In the running world, personal best is openly celebrated and shared. Ex. someone posts pictures of them crossing the finish line of a marathon with a PB time of 4.5 hours, even though the winner finished over 2 hours ago. That is never an irritation. Is the target shooting world so different?

Effort matters. There are plenty of people celebrating their +4 hour marathon time with little training saying how hard it was. No kidding. I'm not impressed and you should have done better. The dedicated athlete working years to pb their time regardless of what that is is something to be proud of. Hats off to you.

Same in shooting. Someone buying a competitive pcb and one hole grouped off a bench at 10 yards. How impressive :/ . On the other hand the guy working with an economy springer for months or years proudly displaying his 1/4" group. Good work. Keep it up.

Perhaps you have it right. All I own is six springers.

I was going to delete this but changed my mind so all could see. It may not be an example of a Darwin winner, but...

If you never miss you are not challenging yourself enough. If you never miss give 10m Olympic air pistol a try. Personally I'm happy when I hit 10 anything with 10m air rifle.

Yup... heck, at this point in the game, I'm happy when I can keep them inside the 8-ring standing!

As time goes on, we seem to be more and more, rewarding participation, instead of accomplishment.
Our world, right here where we live, reflects this drive towards accomplishment. Winning in all endeavours is where the drive is,, or in other words, what the goal is.
Removing the drive to win, will not be beneficial to modern society, imho.
Sure, celebrate your improvements, however minor, on the path to achieving excellence, but never become complacent and accept as final, results that can be improved.
Always strive to improve.

when people show target pictures and say look how good my gun groups and the pellets are off the 12 ring. A miss is a miss and irritates me when I miss. Perhaps I am to hard on myself. I expect a 12 ring every shot and nothing other is acceptable. Quarter inch miss and I am repainting my knockdown targets quite often.

What are other peoples thought on this? Perhaps people should say freehand, bench shooting or tripod?

Some people may well find it "comical" when groups are not on the centre of the bulls eye, the 10 ring. There may be a couple of reasons for that.

As noted above, some shooters may not bother readjusting POI when they shoot a different pellet that has a different POI. Others may prefer to set the POI away from the centre of the bulls eye so that they don't eliminate the POA with the hole resulting from the shots. This matters because it's important to have a clear bulls eye at which to aim. Perhaps many of these shooters are not be concerned that there are shooters who may not understand their motives for not shooting their guns to the centre of the bulls eye.

Good post. When we shoot Chunk, BR, or a Plank Shoot with our ML's, many use an AimingPoint, or BUD set off to one side low or high to aim at while the shots impact the centre of the target for SCORE.
For this reason, setting up your rifle or handgun to hit other than in the centre is normal, or simply when testing pellets or loads, impacting the centre of the 10 ring has no direct value.
We want to observe the precision of the piece. Before going hunting or target shooting we would most assuredly set up for accuracy, that is hitting the centre of the 10 ring.
I have never shot targets with a 12 ring.
