Elmer Fudd Match @ HAHA Saturday Novemer 2
Elmer Fudd Match @ HAHA Saturday Novemer 2
A heads up, the Elmer Fudd shoot is coming up on Saturday, November 2nd!
Read on and let us know if you are coming.
The fun begins at the HAHA and, in Elmer's rascally spirit, we are designing a sub-500 fps friendly course to encourage you to bring out something fun, special, unique to shoot with. There will also be some surprises as our course maestro, Rob W is doing the design. And remember, we'll have the famous chili and carrot cake afterwards. So grab your friend, family member, hunting buddy, or neighbour and join us at HAHA!
Match Details:
1. HAHA gates open at 8:30 AM for course setup, definitely can use hands to get this done quickly
2. Sight in range opens when the course is setup
3. Course opens about 10:00 AM
4. 60 shots - 10 lanes, 3 targets per lane and 2 shots per target
5. Shooting mostly Hunter rules - https://www.fieldtargetcanada.ca/index. ... d-classes/
6. Ideally sub 500 fps guns, though rules are rules and sub 20 ft/lb is within the rules thought maybe not the spirit of the Fudd
7. Shooting lead, diablo pellets only
8. Match fee is $20 and free for first time shooters and Juniors (16 or younger).
Division: Hunter
Classes:
1. Unlimited Rifle- what ever you got for a .177 - .22 cal PCP or Springer, how ever you want to shot it, i.e., no standing/kneeling, scope max 16X, rest is Hunter rules
2. Iron sight Rifle - Hunter rules
3. Iron sight Pistol - definitely sub 500 fps and Hunter rules
4. Vintage - any thing unique, made before 1990 where older is better, Hunter rules
Prizes:
1. Best Vintage rifle
2. Coolest rig as voted on by the group
3. The best Elmer Fudd in spirit and deed, character costumes and accents are encouraged!
4. Closest score to the overall average match score - there may be shoot offs!
CAFTA AGM:
1. Held while we are eating the chili and cake!
2. No nominations for board positions so the incumbents - Brian and Jeff - carry forward
3. Rules update formalizing Open Modified as a sub group of Open and Kneeling position clarification.
4. Comments about the 2024 season from CAFTA President.
What We Need From You:
Drop a note in the comments that you are coming and what you are shooting and the class that you plan to shoot in.

Re: Elmer Fudd Match @ HAHA Saturday Novemer 2
See you there, shooting hunter springer. Have to brush up on my fudd attire. Are targets going to be set with sub 500 in mind ?
Re: Elmer Fudd Match @ HAHA Saturday Novemer 2
Since the guy designing the course will be shooting sub-500 with open sights and poor eyes ...... there is a good chance that most targets will be doable - with a few challenges of course.
Some quick Chairgun numbers indicate that a JSB 8.44 launched at 495 fps (with a 20 yard far zero) will drop over 6 inches at 40 yards and almost 8 inches if launched at 450 fps. Holdovers get rather tricky with open sights since with this much holdover you need to hover in the air above the target without actually being able to see any of the target.
Anything out to 25 yards should be fine since holdover will only be 1 inch so you should be able to aim at a point on the faceplate.
By the way - the drop of that same 450FPS pellet at 100 yards is about 109 inches (9.2 feet) and time of flight will be 0.9 seconds. You may want to tuck this info away for Saturday....
The Fudd is all about having fun shooting and maybe bringing out a gun that you remember plinking with a few decades ago, or a very accurate 10 meter gun, or like me - one that you bought from PA for $130 just for giggles.
If anybody wants to borrow a cheap sub-500 springer for the match let me know ahead of time, I have a few that I could bring.
Note - that this does not mean that you need to shoot sub-500! As Jeff indicated in his original post - you are welcome to bring out your usual FT gun with scope set to a max of 16x - the more the merrier!

Re: Elmer Fudd Match @ HAHA Saturday Novemer 2
Why not set your gun up with a zero out quite a bit further? This way you use hold under between your zeros and with the hold over you may still be able to see the target.
I use to do this with pistol FT using open sights. I set the gun up for a 25 yard zero, which was the longest distance and held under for the rest. I was always able to see the hit zone and figured out how much to hold under for the rest.

Hmm.
Great idea Tim.
I am not sure if I have enough elevation on my sights but I will give that a try.
Thanks!

I will be there in Iron sight Rifle.
Re: Elmer Fudd Match @ HAHA Saturday Novemer 2
I drafted a long post yesterday complete with a bunch of numbers from Chairgun showing the tradeoffs between a shorter zero (20 yards) and a longer one (35 yards).
The system timed out and I did not keep a copy so it is gone.
Quick summary:
The iron (plastic) sights on my sub-500 Crosman Optimus max out in elevation at what Chairgun predicts as a 35 yard zero so that is as far as I will be able to go with hold-under before switching to hold over and potentially hovering over the top of the target and hoping for the best.
The 20 yard zero is more forgiving if you mess up a yardage estimate on near targets.
With a 35 yard zero, Chairgun calculates that if I estimate a target is 10 yards and therefore hold 1.4 inches below the center of the hit zone and the target is actually at 12 yards (requiring 1.7 inches of hold-under) that difference of 0.3 inches will mean a miss if the target had a 1/2 inch hit zone. If I used a 20 yard zero and all else stayed the same, the difference in hold-under for 10 yards is 0.3 inches and 12 yards is 0.37 inches so that would still drop the target.
The advantage of actually being able to see the target by using a hold-under is a huge advantage and more important than the less forgiving range estimating error.
I will be trying this next Saturday in Hamilton - I just have a week to try and improve my yardage estimating!
I will also see how well the Chairgun calculations transfer to the real world!

Great info Rob. Thanks for all your hard work and sharing. I’m afraid of what your course is going to look like though.

I will definitely be there. Can I use a red dot on a vintage sub 500 in any of the classes?

Re: Elmer Fudd Match @ HAHA Saturday Novemer 2
Well this should be a fun challenging match. Not sure what I will bring to shoot. I hope everyone gets in the spirit of the Fudd. Can't wait to see the Elmer costumes and riggs. Then Chris's chili and Geoff's Carrot cake. Yep looking forward to this one big time. Leave My purple bipolar girlfriend home and shoot something else for a change. woohoo!
Re: Elmer Fudd Match @ HAHA Saturday Novemer 2
Vintage class iron sight only or can I use red dot because there is already an iron sight rifle class?
Re: Elmer Fudd Match @ HAHA Saturday Novemer 2
Hi Ted.
I am not running this match, but The Fudd is all about getting out and shooting.
Bring whatever you want (as long as it is .177 or .22 and under 20 FPE) and do not worry about the categories. This is not a competitive match.
