Online competition season has begun!

#1 Post by Rob27 »

The winter season of the online competitions that I participate in has begun.

You can shoot as many practice rounds as you want, but at some point in the month you have to shoot a competition one and submit your scores. I always write the date and actually write on the target before I shoot it whether it is a practice or competition target - that way I remove the temptation to submit that great score that I accidentally shot in a practice round, or to quietly shred that competition target with the 2 awful fliers and try another.

I find these competitions provide motivation to keep me shooting and also keep me using different guns. All the different ones that I shoot are at 6 yards, standing so they work great in my basement.

You do not have to submit pictures or anything, just send an email to the organizer with your score before the monthly cutoff.

Here are the competitions and guns that I enter each month – yes, it is a bunch of shooting, but I believe that this amount of precision shooting offhand each month has really improved my offhand shooting in Field Target matches. Some competitions allow you to enter multiple guns in the same category (like the Budget Springer one), others allow only 1 entry per class (like the Open sights 6Yd Pistol where they have separate classes for Spring, CO2/PCP, and SSP.

Competition Gun
5.5M Rifle – Budget Phantom 22
5.5M Rifle - Budget Optimus 177
5.5M Rifle - Precision HW50S
Budget Springer Phantom 22
Budget Springer Optimus 177
Open 6 Yard Pistol CO2 Airbug
Open 6 Yard Pistol SSP HW75
Optic 6 Yard Pistol CO2 2240
Optic 6 Yard Pistol SSP Beeman P17
PIPAS Vigilante or CP88
Police Pistol Vigilante or CP88
Police Sniper Rifle Phantom 22

It would be great to have some familiar faces from this forum join me in some friendly competition. My handle on that forum is Guns-n-Guitars

I have reformatted all the targets to print on Letter size paper and I will post a link shortly.

You can find all the description and rules for all the competitions here:
https://umarexboysclub.weebly.com/month ... tions.html

The November scores must be submitted by December 1st and after that each month is due on the first Sunday of the following month. If anyone has any questions about how to get started just ping me - or send a note to the leaders of the different competitions - they are a very friendly bunch.

I hope to see some of you on the leaderboard soon!

Hi Rob, thanks for the info.

I noted the CP88 listing you provided for competitions but I didn't see a specific reference on the site you provided.

Here is a link to a Google drive folder where I have pdf versions of the targets that I have converted to letter size paper.
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

When you print them, ensure that you set the print scaling to 100% - do not fit to paper or it will make the targets smaller.
Several of the targets indicate the size that different boxes or circles should be so that you can print one, check with a ruler, then print more when all is good.

Have fun!

I shot a couple of these competitions a few days ago.
Just to give you an idea what the targets look like I thought that I would post a couple here.
I shot these with my Crosman Optimus sub-500 that I installed the custom fabricated Dukemeister trigger in!
Open sights, standing, unsupported at 6 yards, using Excite Econ II pellets.
Different competitions use different targets. The one with 10 bulls (plus a sighter) is for the rifle competition (the file that I posted earlier is called "Rifle challenge LTR size v2" - the 10 ring is 1mm in diameter.
I shoot left to right, top to bottom so all was looking great until my last shot when I yanked one low and left and just nicked the black for a 7!

The other target is for the "Budget Springer" competition (I shoot a couple of my inexpensive springers in both these competitions). This target is much more forgiving ("gamo_target_x2_roundels" with a 10 ring that is 13 mm across.

Glad I saw this today on the 27th.

I think I'll want to take part in this, I have a small single lane "range" set up in the basement/laundry room. It's only 5 meters though. I'll have to see the rules and details, but if I can do that within that range with my Webley Tempest, that would be great.

Edit: it seems the shortest distance doable is six yards = 5.4 meters. I think I can squeeze this in, especially if I make a thinner but more dense target/stopper for pellets. I saw that a cardboard box, stuffed with old clothes, or rags, or something else like that can do the trick, especially for sub500.

The issue I have right now, is the thing I have setup in my basement is made of a large storage bin, as it was made to have a piece of fabric hanging down to stop bbs, and other larger things like paintball and "less lethal"" ammunition as well. A thinner and more dense box, will hopefully free up enough space, for me to be able to practically fit in a 6 yard distance within the laundry room.

That is great Twiggy!
I shot my 6 yard rifle and budget springer targets and still have the various pistol competitions to go.
It will be great to see some other Canadians on the results!

Thanks yeah.

I just managed to find a appropriate size box, fill it with some pieces of old shirt used as rags, some old bed sheets, bubble wrap, package paper, news paper, and an egg carton. Should be enough to stop a sub 500fps pellet, and just in case, I managed to be able to place it within the storage bin, as far back as possible, so there's an extra hard plastic backing to protect the wall as well, and it all fits within 6 yards, with enough room to stand.

I'll just have to check with the organizers if it's standing behind the line, or if the muzzle has to be behind the line as well, if its muzzle behind the line, then I may have to stick to pistol, as a rifle may be tricky to do.

Edit: quick, response received already. Can have feet on the 6 yard line, so, I'm gonna do both budget rifle, and 6yard open pistol.

you can use this type of thing as ballistic putty for safe backstops.

I bought 5 lbs back in 2017. you can use pliers to pull them out and re-use the putty again and again.

Funny you mention that, I actually made a backstop with that duct puddy back in 2018. Problem is, I made it out of chipboard, and used it outside, kept it outside, now it's all wet, rotten, and infested so I can't bring it into the house.

Someday, probably soon, I will probably just go and dig out the puddy, and re-use it in another container.

Edit:

I know I will be using my Webley Tempest for the 6 Yard Pistol Open Sights category, but, I am debating on whether I want to use my WF600P (just a generic cheap Chinese sub 500 pellet rifle .22 I only have 16gr pellets on hand right now) in the Budget Rifle Open Sight category, or my Daisy 499B BB Target Rifle (allegedly most accurate bb rifle in the world) in the Precision Rifle Open Sight Category.

Which do you think would be more accurate and would give me a better score?

I usually enter several different competitions, some with multiple guns (I usually submit 11 or 12 scores)... I would enter all 3!

Yeah, I decided on that as well.

I got the PDFs of the targets printed out, and the stated measurements all match what they should be, so I am set to go in that respect. I think tomorrow I'll take some practice shots and sight in, Friday I'll do the actual shots.

Edit:

It looks like I'll only be doing the 6 Yard Open Pistol, and the Precision Rifle Open Sight.

I tried to sight in the open sights on my WF600P Pellet rifle, and well it still shoots all over the place, sometimes right, sometimes left, sometime high, sometimes low, and this is using a contraption I built to hold rifles still as well, not free hand. Also, even with the sights set literally as low as they can go, it still shoots generally quite high, I mean high enough that in order to hit the bullseye, or even inside the target, I have to aim for the center of the target below it. So it's not really a good experience or anything I would want to enter in competition, so no Budget Rifle Open Sight for me.

On the other hand, my Daisy 499B BB Target Rifle is impressing me, and I am starting to think the claim of "the most accurate BB rifle in the world" may have some truth to it. When I received it from @ten-ring from the forum here, it came with the peep sights off, so I had to install them myself, which I did. It isn't even sighted in yet, and I just took a few shots free hand, even with my extremely wobbly and shaky hold, it still hits inside the target, at 6 yards, when it was actually designed for 5 meters (about half a meter less than 6 yrds), and I'm just using regular Daisy BB's as well, not the recommended Avanti BB's or Hornady Black Diamond. I expect when properly sighted in, there will be an even larger improvement in accuracy, especially if using the recommended BBs.

Thanks again to @ten-ring for selling it to me, there is sure a vast world of difference between these two rifles lol.
