Bracketing?

#1 Post by Mac »

Was wondering if there is someone out there that uses bracketing and knows the exact width of a Gamo field target base? I have started to make a chart to mess about with this season. I do not have a gamo target, so I cannot measure directly.

Thanks.

I started to use bracketing last season and I think that it really helped me to eliminate a few of the wild mistakes that I tend to make each match.
However since I shoot in Hunter Division and have a 16x limit, plus a fairly significant wobble, I get more of a general neighborhood vs a fine measurement.
Also, since I started thinking about bracketing, I have done more "bracketing prevention" when setting out targets. So targets that I set out will often have the base obscured so I (and others) cannot reliably use the base width or target height.
I will be doing target maintenance over the next couple weeks and will measure a Gamo base.

This talk about 16X for hunter class, do the rules allow adjusting parallax?

Parallax, yes, but all distance marking have to be covered. So you cannot use a parralax wheel to range find like you can in the US. In the US, you get hunters using very high doolar scopes, turned down in power, in order to get the best possible range finding. We wanted to avoid that black hole of expense over here. Some are using $4 to $5000 March scopes for hunter.

The chart I am creating will be based on hit zone size, target base and whatever else I can think of that may present itself at the target.

Thanks Mac, for the explanation. Interesting, using my parallax adjustment, I find high power settings give more accurate readings on the dial.
I think perhaps that is what you meant to say.

You absolutely get a more accurate range reading from higher power, however, the hunter division is limited to 16X. So that is what I was referring to.

In open and WFTF divisions, the high power scopes range much more accurately than you can by bracketing, even more accurate than range finders.

No one has a gamo field target they can measure across the front of the base? Please.

I have a real old Gamo rat that has never been shot, but I am not sure about the base measurement. It may have changed on the newer ones. The one I have measures 7 1/16" across the front of the base.

Hi Tim. I started stripping and painting targets last week but did not find any of the Gamo bases. Your repeat request though made me go digging and I remembered that I had used a Gamo base to make this custom one for last Halloween.

The base has 2 parts. The upper section is about 2.25 inches. The lower section is about 7 1/8.

Thanks Rob. That looks the same as mine. Looks like 7 1/16 from the pic. Not sure 1/16" would make that much difference.

That difference is due to camera angle. I thought about shooting more straight on, but then it made it look like the ruler was quite a bit off the other end.

This target was created from a dollar store halloween decoration. I just noticed when looking at the pictures that I posted that there is still a pellet stuck just above the reset connection. Lots of holes in the face plate, not many marks visible on the paddle. I think that we used this in the Fudd and many people were using sub-500 guns and open sights and I had a few of these out farther than they should have been for those guns.
