MOLY LUBE
MOLY LUBE
I've been looking at a number of sites which discuss tuning, lubrication etc. The term 'moly' is often used when referring to lubing a rifle. Can anyone advise what this is. Might this be the MOLY sold at Canadian Tire as a dry lubricant and actually molybdenum disulphide (as per the side of the can??) Thanks.
Hi Tarasdad
The moly you are after is indeed molybdenum disulphide. I find it is best in a paste form, 60% moly should be a minimum. I use Lymans Moly Cream, it's a paste with the viscosity similar to that of butter. It works really well in my experience. I apply it to springs, guides, and pistons, and a 50-50 mix of it and Crosman Pelgunoil to lube linkages and pivot points. HTH,

The Cantire moly grease has a very small amount of moly mixed in a carrier grease. If it works, that's great, but I would be careful not to get it on the seals. I prefer the thick paste as it stays where you put it and doesn't spatter around and get where you don't want it. Either will lubricate moving parts, but the higher the concentrate of moly and the thicker the better.

The low priced tubs and tubes of moly grease at CanTire have a very low concentration of moly... around 3%. A 60%-70% concentration of moly is desired for airguns and also expensive in large amounts.
Jim Macarri sells small containers of moly paste for around $5 USd.
Honda Moly-60 works fine.
Loctite also has a moly paste with 60% concentration.

Loctite Moly Paste (65%) in 8oz container #51048. A bunch of shooters could divide a container.

Honda Moly 60 (60%) in 3oz tube (Honda code #2963866 & part number #08734-0001). A couple of shooters could split a tube.

Jim Macarri has sent his moly paste product to Canada before. I have a couple of containers from Jim. The containers are about the 1.5" high and shaped like a coffee creamer.

I just went to the local Honda's service garage and asked the first person I saw. I ended up walking out with about 15 packs of the stuff for free. 1 pack is enough to do about 2 or 3 guns.
They said they get a few packs with every set of brakes they receive so they always end up with extras lying around.

Alternatives to Macarri tar
I just got my Butchi spring in the mail Friday and now I’m ready to tune (first time). My background is industrial equipment and automotive repair. After reading dozens of sites on Airgun tuning the subject of spring lube seems to center around Macarri’s tar as being “the oneâ€Â
