Paintball speed
Paintball speed
Yeah, I know, this isn't a paintball forum, but they are still air guns, aren't they? (say yes ) Anyway, what speed is a paintball gonna have to go before it SPLATS? And how fast is it gonna have to go before it starts hurting when it hits you? BTW, were talking .68 cal.

Hey, don't hate. It releases negative energy, which is bad for everyone.
Please do not grace my threads with thread crapping in the future, thank you very much.Cadeau wrote:Painball Guns . I hate them! #1 rule of gun safety is never point a gun at anyone or anything you don't want to shoot. Paintball guns are ment to shoot at people and not target practice. I think they should be banned!!
BTW that was post #100!

webstien's nailed it.
Back in the 80's they chronoed markers by sound (Duzzat sound hot to you?) or by blowing bark off of trees.
It was then determined that a 3g (gram not grains; roughly 50 gr) paintball travelling at 325-350 fps could potentially break small bones (carpals, floating ribs, etc. ; we're talking about ~12 foot pounds at the muzzle). They set 300 fps as the legal maximum muzzle velocity. Anybody shooting faster than that in a game deserves a good knock upside the head with a full 12oz cylinder IMHO.
I have successfully launched paintballs in excess of 450 fps but they tend to corkscrew, hook, dive and do all kinds of screwy things.
I did a drop test with some PMI premiums and some crappy, lumpy paint and determined that a paintball falling from a height of approximately 7 feet would break 60% of the time. A few quick calculations reveeaeled that the terminal velocity was around 15 fps.

You can bleed from being hit by a paintball marker at some parts of your body, Its not very pleasant. I got hit on the side of my neck from an opposing player on the opposite side of the field a few seconds into a match, it broke the skin and there was a little bit of bleeding and what looked like an alien gave me a hicky for a few weeks (purple in the middle, yellow bruising all around).
Some of you must be shaking your head right now... ok it may not be for everyone but its a lot of fun if your safe. No more dangerous then football, IMO.
Anyways...
After that I bought a neck protector... now if i play I wear a wee wee protector and neck protector. Not too much to worry about after that...

Or those evil devil-worshipper-making mind rotting cap guns? Or the bad habit-teaching nasting sticky pink dart guns??Cadeau wrote:Painball Guns . pure pwnage, nice.
But on the original question, 300fps is the max allowed at any field.
The main reason for this is that a 300fps .68 cal paintball shot from under 30 feet or so will break bare skin. I've got a nasty scar on my arm from being hit from close range.
I've noticed that there are a few folks around here that don't approve of paintball guns. Now on the field everyone is protected and they will not be harmed if a paintball gun is either pointed or fired at them. Maybe they'll get a bruise or a nasty welt, but generally thats what they've signed up for. If you want to ban paintball guns you'd might as well ban all guns, even your air rifles 'cause people with no respect for the equipment or the law will just as soon fire air rifles at unprotected individuals as paintball guns.

all the time i have played it has been under 300f/s 250 indoor 290 outdoor
. i've never seen a gun that will get even close to 400. and i hope i never do . i think that would probably break your fingers on a coold day.
AB' i suggest you go to a paintball feild and get some one to shoot you in the neck at 200f/s and then imagine 300f/s :O

In the game of paintball, anything over 300 fps (~10 ftlbs) is reckless and dangerous. It should be considered assault with intent.
My m98 chronoed at 446 out of the box (~22 ftlbs). My Nightmare Was shooting in the mid 380's when I recieved it (~16 ftlbs). I've since respringed it and added a rear velocity adjuster to bring it down to safe speeds.
Who here did not play cops and robbers, cowboys and indians or Army when they were a kid? Paintball is a safe, fun way to relive your misspent youth. I'm not talking about the trash talking tournament scene, I'm talking about woodsball and (shudder) outlaw, the roots of the game. . .
As long as you play by the rules (Always wear your mask and plug your barrels in the safe zone. Always chrono at less than 300fps (preferably 285ish incase your velocity spikes. . .)) paintball is safer than bowling, badminton and just about every other sport out there.
Don't knock it until you've tried it.
It's also a shooting sport. Try to hit a moving target with a slow moving. liquid filled, imperfect ball with the physical embodiment of the perfect knuckle baller thrower. . . Its not like punching paper.
And then there's the tinkering aspect. . . I tend to tinker way more with paintball gear, than I actually play with it.
Its where I learned my mad airsmithing skillz.
