I see one glaring possibility.....you guys are all assuming the 2X4 was spruce. Nowadays, the common material for dimensional lumber is SPF (Spruce-pine-fir)....but in the 50-60-70's it was VERY common (in fact, it was regular practice) to use red and white cedar as framing maerial. Much softer than Fir. Maybe this explains it?

I think you got something there Wrong Way. That could be the answer. But I doubt my buddy could remember that far back as to what kind of wood he was using lol.

I just did a test with the 2 most powerful airguns I own-the .22 350mag and my.177 cal HW97. The results using Logun penetrators,9.7gr and 16gr at a distance of 1":
350 mag-803fps=1.2" - just started to crack the other side of the board.
HW97 798fps=.94"

But 1" is certainly not very far. My buddy told my it would make it through from like 10 feet. My modified 1377c will now crack out the other side of a spruce 2x4 from 20 feet.

Does anyone have a .177 Diana 48/52? Mine did 1040fps with CPL pellets. It would be interesting to see someones results with the hard CPL on a 2X4 .

I probably have a piece of cedar around somewhere. I will shoot it today or tomorrow and post results tomorrow night or on monday morning. I'm not sure what gun I will use but I will make sure to state what gun I used after I do the test.

no wonder you believed your friends gun will go through a 2x4 ,you beleive yours will to . ?????

i have 10 types of pellet 12gr-15gr .none will go through at 1250f/s ..not even crack the back . i had to try again an still nothing

I'm serious my 1377c will crack out the opposite side of a spruce 2x4 from 20 feet. I have no way of proving that to you so you will just have to take my word for it. It's because I did the rifle conversion and a whole litter load of valve mods.

Well I did some tests. This time I used my Slavia 631 630 fps and for the fun of it my Diana 22 about 500fps and shot a spruce 2x4. Here are the results.

Rifle: Slavia 631
Velocity: 630fps
Action: Break Barrel
Caliber: .177
Pellet: Gamo Magnum
10 feet: 7/16"
8 feet: 1/2"

Rifle: Diana 22
Velocity: about 500fps
Action: Break barrel
Caliber: .177
Pellet: Gamo Magnum
10 feet: pellet skrit flush with wood
8 feet. same thing

So I realized my 631 and 620 are almost the exact same power the 620 doing a little more. But in conclusion my buddy was joshing me about getting through a 2x4 with his 620 because the best I can get from 620 with the original spring and a good moly tune is 1/2" into a 2x4 from 10 feet. So in other words it wont get through a 2x4 unless it's balsa wood.

Guys, can you provide some technical info about the Slavia 620? I didn't find much about it on net, and i understand this was the most powerfull springer from Slavia, up until the new 634.
And second.. RM422&gang

how does the Slavia 631 (original factory power) performs when using a heavy pellet, like 10gr let's say?

Technical info about the 620 well it as you said was the most powerful Slavia up until lthe 634. I bet with a stronger spring the 620 would easily out do the 634. I could be wrong though. The 620 is capable of 700fps+ I don't care what anybody says about it only being able to do like 650fps max.

As for the 631's performance with 10gr pellets I have never tried my 631 or 620 with heavy pellets but I would assume they would both hit very hard.

Guys, i had a Slavia 620 and it would NEVER go through a 2x4 !! Not a chance.. The old crosman 2200 magnum .22 pump rifle put that to shame.. It was rated at 790 fps when i bought it and that would do 3/4 plywood at CLOSE range.
