Looking to get an Airgun

#1 Post by nighthawk39 »

Hey everyone, I'm new to the forums. (found out about it through CGN) I'm looking to get into target shooting, not olympic stuff but just general recreation target shooting. I don't posses a PAL, so a sub 500 FPS air rifle seems like a good idea. I do have some experience with them but not enough to make an informed purchase decision on my own. So here's my question:

What is the best below 500 FPS air rifle in terms of
a) accuracy (target shooting)
b) power and
c) quality

I don't intend on hunting with it, so small game is out of the question. Some rifles I have been looking at are the Benjamin Legacy 1000 (in 500 fps version), and the Quest (in 500 fps). If there are any other good guns you would like to suggest feel free.

Yes I used the search feature. :)

Edit: I also want something with a traditional look like the Benjamin Legacy has, but not necessarily with a wood finish. For example, I like the look of http://www.gamo-airguns.com/air-rifle-850-carbine.htm and http://www.gamo-airguns.com/fotos/varmint-hunter-lg.gif although I don't know if those are available in sub 500 FPS.

for 10m entry level target shooting. CZ Slavia 631 hands down.

IT has the power you need, the accuracy, and its built really well.

you can buy one through home hardware or online.

Some reviews:

Edited my original post. ^^

Another thing I should have mentioned, I want something with a more traditional look to it, like the Benjamin Legacy. I do a lot of graphic design so things that look good make me happy. :D The Slavia just doesn't do it for me. :) Thanks for the link.

If you like accuracy for 10 meters / 33'. These 2 are the most accurate of my 20 airguns under $350
I would go for a Daisy Avanti 853c at $315.00 or little less in accuracy & guality the Daisy953 at $110.89
They are the 2 top one in the picture.

You can get one from them:

For decent accuracy and quality you might want to consider the Weihrauch rifles. They are available in 500fps versions (detuned).
For higher power, at under 500fps, you might want to consider .22 caliber. You have to decide how important power is to you.
Illingworth Imports has a good price on the Weihrauch HW30S. D&L Airgun has good prices on other detuned Weihrauch rifles.

Diana is another option

BSA SuperSport is another option

You did not mention price range.

Yep, I like Weihrauch products. :D

Thanks for those great links guys. I'm gunna check that stuff out in the next little while.

TCooper: For price I would prefer to stay below $300, but if there is something that goes for a bit more (and is worth it) I wouldn't mind spending a bit extra.

airsmith282: Do you own a Crosman Challenger 2000? After looking at it I must say I am impressed.

The Weihrauch HW30S is only $261Cdn at Illingworth Imports. I did a review on mine at http://my.tbaytel.net/~coopers@tbaytel.net/HW30SReview/
The HW30S is available in .177 and .22 caliber. The .177 is obviously cheaper to feed. The Beeman company in the USA calls this popular rifle the "Beeman R7".

Another option is the Diana 24. I think Russell Sports in Alberta has them for around $229Cdn.

These German break-barrel rifles are good quality.

By the way your first posting reads I assume you are not considering formal 10m competition... but rather an accurate plinking rifle that can be used for paper targets too.

I tested a Crosman Challenger 2000. The review is on my web site. The 2000 is a CO2 rifle that requires 12g powerlets.

After doing some searching on the Daisy 953 I found someone complained that it has a plastic bolt. Is this an issue? Can it be easily replaced with a metal bolt should that be required?

Does anyone have pictures of this gun other than the generic side views that are all over the internet?

(I'm reading reviews on it at reviewcenter.com right now)

The bolt in Daisy's don't work the same way a real gun's bolt works. The bolt on the Daisy is just pulled back and a pellet is inserted and you just push the bolt back.

With my 953 i don't have no problem with the plastic bolt, it works fine.
But my 953 does not scope well or peepsight well.
The open fiber-optic sight works well.
I had to drill a hole in the stock of my 953 to instal a nut & srew above the pump lever in front of the handle like the one in the 853c.
I had to do that because the handle would not stay up when the gun was not cocked & pump.
The picture of my 953 is second one from the top.
Ho yes most of the break-barrel are hold sensitive
And single pump & co2 air rifle are not hold sensitive.
