Looked for Canadian illegality.... .22 calib ammo.

#1 Post by LarryS »

I have searched before and since, for info that supported a comment made that .22 caliber ammo, (like balls) were illegal to obtain or use in Canada.

I have yet to find any on-line source quoting Canadian Firearms Law that confirms this. So.... is .22 legal or not?..... or just difficult to find sources for because that caliber is not as popular or prevelant as .177?.

No not .22, it's .25 and .32 that are prohibited...

Are you sure lead balls are illegal? Maybe certain handguns, in certain calibers and barrel lengths, are prohibited. Maybe that's where the confusion is coming from?

I cast .375cal and .44 cal lead balls for my slingshots. I even have some .30 or .32cal balls from a few years ago. I really doubt they are illegal.

Airgun ammo, ball or otherwise, and .22 cal or otherwise, is legal and easily obtainable in Canada.

The reference to prohibited calibers that may be clouding the waters here are in regard to certain handguns that have been deemed prohibited by virtue of their (short) barrel length or by the fact that they are in .25 or .32 cal. The vast majority of handguns in this class are defined as "purse guns" or Saturday night specials by Canadian law. There are exemptions in this law for the olympic class target guns, such as the Walther (GSP, OSP?) in .32 cal. and similar such guns, but it is a very short list.
