Let's have some fun. Here is another hypothetical situation. You modify a non-PAL air rifle to become PAL rated and use it to shoot within city limits. Someone calls the police and you get charged with:
Criminal Code of Canada
Sec 86 - Careless Use Of Firearm (max 2 years imprisonment)
Sec 91 - Unauthorized Possession Of Firearm (max 5 years imprisonment)
Sec 92 - Possession Of Firearm Knowing Its Possession Is Unathorized (max 10 years imprisonment)
Let's do another hypothetical situation where you modify a non-PAL air pistol to become PAL rated.
In addition to the above 3 changes you could also face.
Criminal Code of Canada
Sec 95 - Possession Of Prohibited of Restricted Firearm With Ammunition (max 10 years imprisonment)
The police will decide which charges to puruse. With a good lawyer you could convince the judge to punish on summary conviction and not do time. Too bad about the lawyer bill.
Is it legal to create a PAL rated firearm by modifying a non-PAL airgun to become PAL rated? Have you checked with the CFC and RCMP?
If caught with an illegal firearm you will be immediately arrested cuffed and taken to jail to be charged. The crown will persecute you immediately to get a criminal conviction. Lets also remember that with a criminal record travel out of the country is impossible. Future job possibilities in a corporate venue or with a company that requires a security check will flag you. If you think you will mod and just keep it on your property here’s a few situations that will leave you open to the law searching your home and discovering your illegal unit. A fire or flood, neighbor complaint, tips from a friend etc.. When they pick up an air gun they ALWAYS seize and check it's ballistic.
Something also to be aware of is it just allows you to posses long arms ONLY! To own a over 500 pistol you need to take and acquire the restricted weapons course and register the pistol. By the way Ignorance of the law is not a defense in court.
the way that i look at it is that i have my pal if i want to modify my airgun to shoot over 500 fps and it is within my legal demesions ie +26 inchs i blv i have nothing to worry about........just what ever you do, do it legally the 110$ for the firearms or hunting course or 170$ for both is MUCH cheaper than the fines, jail time, and explaining to your wife/gf that you brutally cheated on her against your will with some guy named big earl or bubba

According to the Criminal Code, a restricted firearm is:
* a handgun that is not a prohibited firearm;
* a semi-automatic, centre-fire rifle or shotgun with a barrel length less than 470 mm (18.5 inches) that is not prohibited; * a rifle or shotgun that can fire when its overall length is reduced by folding, telescoping or some other means to less than 660 mm (26 inches);
* any firearm prescribed as restricted (including some long guns).
This is a great thread and I hope it will open the eyes of people who are ignorant of the actual law. Please read the firearm act posted here. There are a lot of mods many of us do that do not reclassify the original gun into full firearm or restricted firearm status. Trigger, stock etc. I have several air rifles over the 500 that where registered at purchase along with my other firarms.
thanks for the compliment there and i totally agree with what you said about cops having more to worry about like being totally honest here if you have a .22 airgun shooting 1000 fps and you are using it resposibly cops see it as just that, an airgun, where as you see a kid running around town with a cp99 compact and the cops sees that it is no longer just an airgun. often the deciding factor is responsibility for exapmle even though they are "just airguns" when ever i travel with them i treat them like my powder burners, trigger lock, locked case, ammo, c02 ect locked in an ammo box WAY above the legal requirement but it just looks that much better that a 19 yr old guy is taking the time and care to be responsible

every body guns should have trigger locks on them,i dont care if ur the friggen pope. put a trigger lock on it and keep it in a locked hardcase or
gun locker
i totally agree when im at home they are either in thier safe or a steel reinforced maple gun rack in my living room and that is only when i have guests over and we are all sitting there
