I was reading the hunters guide for quebec and on page 33 of 65 it says that it is prohibited to hunt with an air gun. Is that true? Is it illegal to hunt with any air gun?

Thanks Todd,TCooper wrote:Several years ago I phoned an MNR office in Ontario to ask about airgun hunting for grouse and rabbits. I was transferred to a guy who answered my question by says that we can use shotguns, rimfires, airguns, bows, slingshots, rocks, sticks... or try to catch them with your hands.

I figure they mean not to hunt Deer and moose with an airgun. Anyways, the largest animal id take with one of my airguns would be a rabbit, unless I buy a PCP in the future.
I'm not up to date on Quebec hunting laws but the Ontario laws have some airgun information in them.
In certain counties a person cannot use a rifle larger than .275" for small game hunting. Toronto, Waterloo, and York are included in the list of counties. This would mean that a bigbore DAQ rifle would not be legal if it shot over 500fps. In detuned form it could slip out of the firearms classification and might be legal. I guess the .25 caliber air rifles would be illegal too, for hunting in these counties, if they were over 500fps. I would recommend phoning the MNR to check on bigbore airgun status.
A person cannot use a firearm with greater caliber or projectile power than the common .22 rimfire for hunting small game, during big game season... unless in possession of a big game licence. Once again, the large bore (PAL rated) air rifles would likely be effected with this law. Using a .45cal DAQ for grouse during big game season would require a person to also have a big game licence. The .25 caliber PAL rated airguns would also likely be effected by this game law. I couldn't find a statement that exempted airguns from this law.
Page 21 of the 2005 hunting regs states that:
"Firearms include air or pellet guns, bows and cross bows. You may use semi-automatic or repeating rifles for hunting in Ontario, but not handguns or full automatic firearms. Air and pellet pistols with a muzzle velocity less than 500 feet per second may be used for hunting in Ontario."
The law regarding encasing firearms from 1/2 hour after sunset to 1/2 hour before sunrise does apply to airguns. Also, the law regarding discharge across roadways will apply.
