Reconditioning 40 yr. O-Rings & leaving gun pumped up.

#1 Post by LarryS »

After the catastrophic failure of my 40 Yr. old gun seals from too many pumps (7 X 40 or so), in a short period.....

I attempted to recondition the hardened O-rings to some kind of softness using alchohol, then diesel, followed by gear grease(the real stuff) used by Makita in their power tools. The seals are working again and for the first time EVER.... gun holds pressure over-night and beyond even after shooting 20 X 7 pumps total in a short period.

My thinking and practice now is.....pump the gun 3 to 7 times before putting it away unloaded, to keep the seals from relaxing back to the former hardened shape that leaked. Don't know if this will work for long term storage(a week or so) but I am making it a trial practice now after the second days shooting period.

Does anyone have any info on where I can find original pressure chamber parts(complete) & all the O-ring seals? or if not original... parts that are very close to the original manufacturing?. The gun is a 1963-1965 Crosman spoon handle model in .22 caliber.

I do not want to send my parts in as a "trade" plus dollars, or to be "reconditioned by substitution" as some outfits that sell parts seem to want us to do. I am suspicious of that. :? -LarryS

If you have to take the "O" rings out again, take them to an auto parts store or a hydraulics shop and see if they can find a match in thier stock.

The "O" rings that are in my 1377 right now came from the local Carquest store. They were a perfect fit.

Hi Metalmuncher. I did find a few O-rings that would fit at local hardware stores but not all the sizes or shapes I needed.

Problem now is.... the O-rings that appear to have a flat side deliberately manufactured. I have not found any source for them. Especially important is the rings that are inside the brass releasing "cap" that allows the pressure chamber to expell air into the chamber porting on a Cr 140.

Do you or anyone _KNOW_ for_sure_, whether all the rings started out as common O-rings which became flattened out over time? or were they in fact special?. -LarryS
