HW50S showed Up
HW50S showed Up
from D&L couple of days ago! The packing was incredible and the gun is a blast to use. Two quick questions to those who have used it - ramjet, Mulby, Sniper and whoever else.
1. Why is this thing so DAMN hard to cock? I have put thru 400 or so .22 thru the barrel and it's still hard to cock AND uncock!. Seriously guys I am no weakling but after about 40 or so pellets my arms actually hurt. This is my first .22 - is that the reason? I hanve a quest & beaman and they were a bit harsh in the beginning but after about 100 .117 or so they got much better. But this thing is a killer! Why oh why!!
I LOVE THE GUN THO! She's so damn accurate - so I keep on using it...bitching and enjoying at the same time!
2. Noticed HW50S has no scope stop and I mounted a tasco 4x? - couple of shots later stated to creep backwards. I do want to mount a scope on her but not sure where to get the stops from. Any ideas?

Hi Sammy,
Congratulations ..... you got one of the finest spring airgun in the market.
Hard to cock?, drop some oil in the hinge and see if that help,
if not unwind the hinge screw and if that help. If it does,
I would put some locktite and leave at that setting.
I think it will eventually gets loosen, it's just take longer perhaps than
Quest or Beeman.
You can get a scope stopper, or a B mount:

Mines pretty hard to cock too, probably due to the short barrel length and the fact its pal-rated
BTW don't worry about it,as long as its cocking smoothly and nothing is rubbing against anything(eg:cocking lever rubbing against the inside of the stock,or breech block rubbing against receiver due to over tightening)its fine.Congrats on your new gun!

My HW97k .22 was seriously hard to cock when I first got it. I stripped it down, cleaned it lubed it and tarred the spring. It got way quieter to fire and smoother, but it was still quite heavy cocking. I dont know if Ive built up muscle or just got used to it but now after several thousand shots its smooth and fairly easy for me. In comparison my HW30s was easily cocked from day one. I think you are mostly experiencing the difference between a gun that puts out 6 fpe and one that is 15-20fpe.
How tight is the hinge bolt? A good adjustment is when the barrel will just barely drop with it's own weight after being cocked and returned to almost closed position (no spring tension).
Maybe remove your stock and look at the bottom of the receiver tube. Sometimes jointed cocking linkages will rub on the underside of the tube. Look for scratches on the tube. Moly paste will help reduce friction. It works great on the hinge bolt too (none on threads).
HTH,
Todd

Congrat's Sammy,
You've got lots of great advice already, so I won't repeat anything. Mine has quite a few hundred rounds through it now and cocking effort and recoil have both relaxed through wearing in. Havn't chronied it for a little while, but it's likely still hovering around 11fpe. I shoot mine with a peep sight, my personal favorite sight system.

Thanks Mulby for your input. I had bought the REX scope from sunny to put on this rifle, but now I am thinking hard...as it is the rifle is heavy and to add a 6x24x50 sidewheel scope on it would tire me out rather quickly.
If you don't mind telling me where did you buy your peep sight from and for how much?

I just recently got two Beeman sport aperture sights from D&L, great sights. But, they didn't have enough downward adjustment for my Slavia's or my HW50s, though it was close for the 50 just a tad high at 10 meters. They do work very well on my fixed barrel guns and also on the Diana 24's, apperantly they don't have much if any droop.
I've got three Anschutz diopters that I have slowly acquired from gun shows and freinds, average cost for each- $75cnd. I would pay more for sights like these. They are great quality and have tons of adjustment room, even for drooped guns.
I suppose you could try and find a riser block for your front sight and then have enough height to use the Beeman/Williams sight. Who know's though, it may work on your rifle with out any issues. Good luck,
Mulby
