Duct Seal

I have always kept my eyes open in hardware stores but I've never seen any.

Is this the stuff? How thick should it be to stop anything up to a Diana 54 (.177)? And how much is usually needed for an "average sized" trap?

Your link is dead but you can buy duct seal in any decent hardware store, you can find in the electrical section, next to fuse boxes, conduits, etc. If you can't find it...ask someone in that section.

$2.48/lb at Home Depot. AS stated. . .in the electrical section. I've got 7 lbs of it in my home made pellet trap.

Thanks for the responses, but can anyone give me an idea of how well this stuff stops pellets?
What I mean is roughly how deep will a given pellet at a given velocity penetrate? How about a .22 at 500fps?

I can give you a difinitive answer on that tomorrow (when the wife isn't around).

Offhand, I can tell you that a Crosman wadcutter at 500 fps will not fully penetrate the minor thickness of a block of duct seal.

About a 1/2" of duct seal will do the trick. If you place the bull in the same spot each time, pellets will eventually make their way through.

I use 1.5" of duct seal. This will easily stop 500fps pellets in .177 and .22 calibers. It also does fine for 600fps in .177 caliber.

I tried filling and empty tuna can with duct seal for my Diana 36 at 830fps with 7.9gr (sweet shooter at this velocity). The pellets would eat a hole through the putty in about a dozen shots. It would work fine if I mashed the hole closed every few shots. It would have been better to at least 2.5" for this rifle. Also use a steel backstop behind the duct seal, just in case.

.22 cal Gamo Masterpoint, ~500fps, 2" from muzzle to Duct Seal. Pellet skirt is ~15mm from the surface of the duct seal. And my ears are ringing.

I usually shoot my HW40 (382fps - 7.9gr) and HW45 (415fps - 14.5gr) in my basement, using the duct seal trap. Pellets penetrate to flush with the surface of the putty. After a while the pellets start to hit the same place and they push a bit further but they never get to the bottom of the 1.5". An inch would likely be fine but I use 1.5" thickness.

When I was velocity testing my TAU-7 I had it clamped into a B&D Workmate. The pistol was shot through a chronograph and immediately behind the chronograph was the duct seal trap. Velocity was around 485fps with 7.3gr pellets. After 10 shots I could pull a stack of pellets out of the putty that was about 3/4" long. They all stuck inside one another and the last pellet was flush with the putty surface. It was like a plug made of lead. I wish I could shoot like that offhand.

I see exactly the same thing with my M2K4. Crosman wadcutters at ~383 fps , the pellet skirt is flush with the surface of the duct seal.

So it sounds like Duct seal is very good for stopping any pellet at sub-500fps. But I guess it wouldn't be too good for use with my D54. That's ok though I was just curious about that, I'll only be using the trap for my non-PAL guns anyway.

Hey Jester....I have used it to stop pellets in the 16 fpe range as close as 10 yards .......thousands of pellets stopped by this trap.....
I clean it once a month.......it's made of a 10"x10"x4"utility electrical box found at H.D.....the putty is 3" deep in the box.......
magnets are utilized to hold paper targets in front of the opening....
I've been using this rig for quite some time now.... never had any problems with it ...

I went by a local electical supply shop, they had Duct Seal in 1 lb and 5 lb blocks.

Got the 2 of the 5 lb blocks for $2/lb. ie $20.00

The 1 lb blocks were $2.35 each.

I found the same stuff at HD for $2.48, not a big difference, but it was easier to install the flat square 5 lb blocks in my trap. They were about 8x8x1.5" in size

Home Depot must be the same across Canada as I picked up 8lbs at $2.48 a lb this weekend as well in the Surrey store. Unfortunatley they did not have the 5lb pug in this neck of the woods. I agree would have been lot nicer. Cheap at double the price as it seems to last.
