Anbody have a pic of a Heavy RB grip for Mark I ?

#1 Post by cfraser »

That's what Ralph recommends for my hand size. I can't find any refs to it, so I can even ask about "feel". It's apparently in between Replacement and Target size, but costs more... Thanks.

Ralph sent me some pics, and he called too. Cool!

Anyway, in case somebody in the future wants to know, the Mark I Heavy is like the Replacement in shape but about 15% thicker. It is the same price as the other grips.

Ralph thought I should go for the Heavy, even though I'm kinda small. His rationale is, if you don't know for sure and a grip is too big, you can always sand it down, but you can't make a small grip bigger...

I just received his target grips for the Mk.I and I find them too bulky. I had them finished just in oil...so sanding them down and refinishing is a piece of cake.

RB grips

I got some zebrawood grips for my P1 and asked the the larger size so he sent both, the large were too big for me and I have large hands. stay with the regular size-my thoughts.

I don't know how to include pics in my post, I have some.

The Mark I Heavy are apparently only a bit thicker than the Replacement (it's really hard to tell by looking, if you didn't already know), and much thinner than the Target.

Unless somebody has the Mark I Heavy grips already and can enlighten me (they don't have much profile on the RB site), I'm going to stick with them just to not be a nuisance. I still have a few days to change my mind... I find the stock grip a good size, but I have no idea how a "bit" bigger might be.

I am awful with wood, but I imagine I could sand and lacquer (what I got). Apparently some "special" lacquer is used with woods like cocobolo. We'll see.

I asked Ralph what the differences were...here's his reply...
Rob,
A Heavy is twice as thick as a plastic grips. Target is three times as thick as plastic grips. Made for large hands. Sorry, I do not do checkering.
Thanks,
Ralph

^ Wow, that sure doesn't match the pics he sent. Nor the 15% thicker he told me for the Heavy. We talked for at least an hour, not a drive-by...

Honestly, are your Target grips 3 times as thick as the stock grips? Everywhere? I find that hard to imagine, maybe comparing the thick bottom to the thinnest part of stock grips. You'd need monster hands for that otherwise.

I really need to know. I still have time to change, he said it would be several days before he'd get around to my grips.

Edit: got to thinking, and maybe Ralph meant the thickness of the wood compared to the thickness of the plastic, as opposed to the thickness of the whole grip...if you know what I mean. Just a thought, trying to put together his info to you and to me...

If was to buy them again, I would buy the replacements or the heavy style. If you like the feel of the original plastic grips....stick with the same shape!!!

I 300% agree! Stock size is fine for me.

Let me throw another wrench in the works. Somebody else told me he thinks his Replacement grips are actually a bit thinner (overall) than the stock grips. He suspects the Heavy grips are the real "replacement", in that they're probably more like the same thickness as the originals, though he's never seen the Heavy except in the pic.

Don't worry, I'll report, and tell you truthfully if I made a bad decision (for me). Somebody's got to look at them at least, and directly compare to stock plastic.

airgunfun: You (or anybody else) still interested in any info re the sizing of the Mark I (and MK I and II) "Heavy" grips?

If so I am not sure how to provide the info. I could measure the thickness of the grips at a few places, or put the grips together (no gun) and measure the circumference with a string at a few places, etc. Something that would give a good idea compared to the stock plastic grips??

Saying something like "it fits my hand well" etc. is kinda meaningless...

My Mark I was recently painted. You all know how good the original Mark I paint was. I was going to leave it for a week to dry as I didn't try "baking" it in the oven (don't know if that would help or not). So I still have a few days to go before I want to put the grips on. Maybe I'll break down sooner, maybe somebody'll come up with a hint to enhance the paint drying (it's dry, but I want REALLY dry)...

Edit: I can say that the Heavy grip is somewhat thicker than the stock plastic ones. Maybe 20-30% overall, not a lot but you can see it.

Totally OT for this thread, but the Super Pumper and grip set I also got for the 1322 is awesome...so much wood it totally transforms the gun into a very impressive-looking and -feeling beast. Pumper is as good-feeling as the 2289 one I was using and of course no comparison to the useless stock one.
