QB 78 Thumbhole stock

#1 Post by hawker »

Last week Sniper tried his very best to provide me with one of his thumbhole QB stocks. We were having some difficulty getting the money transfered without neither of us paying too much but in the end I decided to abort my attempt to get a stock sent over from Canada (I, by the way, live in Holland) Because it was getting to expensive with shipping and what not more. Thanks again Dan for all your effort. In the end I went to an exotic wood dealer and got myself a nice peace of black walnut (yes, it's exotic where I live!) and started making my own QB thumbhole stock. Maybe this might encourage some of you to try your hands at this too.

Mark

I got the wood on Tuesday and this picture was taken on friday. I did get a couple of blisters from sanding and carving but when I start on something like this I can hardly stop untill it's done.
I'm pasing myself now to make sure I'm not going to rush it.

What tools did you use to shape it?
Why did you cut the trigger guard?

The tools used were bandsaw (outline), drill to cut the hole, router to form the bed and I milled out the action on a vertical milling attachment on my lathe. The rest was done using a chisel and sandpaper. Later I used a dremel with ball tool to get the stippling around the pistolgrip done.
I didn't cut the triggerguard on purpose. the action fell of my workbench while I was working the stock. Wouldn't you know it landed right on the trigger guard.
