hey guys,
apart from my airgun love i also am into airsofting, anyone else?
well i wanted to see if you could make your own airsoft (rifle, spring) of decent quality.
today i made one !!!! i bought a bike pump in a dollar store for a dollar (this is a perfect chamber with apiston and the best seal you can get for $1, all it needs is a spring now). since i wanted to test it as fast as i could i put 3 thick rubber bands / elastics on the 2 ends of the pump (now when you pull it back and let go, the piston flies forward).
now i was looking around for something to be used as a barrel, voila - an arrowshaft (carbon fiber tube 1/4 iner diameter - i bought the arrows for $50 for a dozen in BassPro {i am also into archery}) the caliber of airsoft BB's is .24cal or 6mm so this arrowshaft is not the best fit, but its strong, straight, light and is the only thing that i found in 10 seconds of exhausting search in my room. i ducktaped the arrow as close as i could to what now is a transfer port (the place where the air comes out of the pump).
now, the testing, i did not chrony it yet, but i tell you this much - the BB went fast, and flew straight for about 20 meters until it started curving down. this is the same distance that is reached by my spring 220fps (chronoed) airsoft pistols do. so my guess is that this $1 pump + 3 elastics + pipe can get me ~200fps with a plastic BB, i have one thing to tell you - OH MY GOD, LOL !!!
what do you think?
as soon as i get a chance to i will draw some designs and actually make a prototype #2, chrono and take pictures, blah, blah, blah.

hehe, i am not sure that you will see any real results in the future 2 weeks, i will be busy for the whole time, but what i could do until now was this:
here you can see the pump with elastics on it and the barel mounted:
here you can see the "prototype2" overal:
here is a closer image:
here are the main components - on the right is an archery trigger release (when the trigger is pushed / squized the clap looking think opens. then you see a piece of metal wire sticking out of the pump - thats what the clamp attaches to. then goes the pump with elastics and the barrel:
closeup of the trigger:
the power decreased after i put the whole "gun" onto the ski pole (yeah thats what it is, a ski pole that you see on the pictures). before it was REAL close to piercing a coke can (if an airsoft pierces a coke can, its real good and you will have fun and luck skirmishing with it) and now i can see it loosing a bit of power as the coke can gets a smaller dent. i cannot chrony it right now since its dark and i dont have a set up for using a chrony inside.
sorry all of you 56k'ers for the large images, in next posts i will put small quality images on actual display and have links to the high quality ones.

little advice question:
you know that a pump has this valve that only lets air get out of the pump and not get in at the front, right?
well i think it causes me to get an uneven discharge of air from the pump and thats why i am loosing power... the pull with that many elastics is REAL hard, so i think i should be getting amazing results, but i dont so, i think that the valve is the reason.
plus if i take the valve away, when i pull the pump, it will suck the BB in as close to the pump - no more "muzzle loading",
