Prohibited firearms include all fully automatic firearms, converted automatics and a variety of other scary looking firearms which have been classified as "prohibited" by order-in-council. Most types of prohibited firearms are "grandfathered" to their current legal owners (i.e., owners are allowed to keep them), but cannot be transfered to non-grandfathered individuals. Firearms converted from full-automatic to semi-automatic, and many handguns (barrel lengths less than or equal to 105mm, .25 or .32 calibre) fall into the prohibited class. If you do not already own prohibited long guns, there is no legal means to acquire firearms of this type.

i wonder if he means RPAL....in a previous post i remember someone thought they were one and the same not knowing there were 3 classes of PAL, RPAL and prohibited

Only partially correct. You are not granted "prohib status" - you are simply given a special authorization to keep the prohib gun that was willed to you. Your PAL or RPAL does not change to include the category under which the willed prohib falls, therefore, you are not granted "prohib status".

Can I acquire a prohibited firearm if I am not grandfathered?

No you cannot:

Exception: If you are not grandfathered, the only prohibited firearms you may possess or acquire are handguns with a barrel length of 105 mm or less or that discharge .25 or .32 calibre ammunition, and only if all of the following criteria are met:

* the handgun was made before 1946, and
* the handgun was registered in Canada on December 1, 1998, and
* you are the child, grandchild, brother, sister or spouse of the lawful owner, and
* you are acquiring it for an approved purpose such as target shooting or as part of a collection.

In these circumstances, you can lawfully possess the handgun in question, but you are not grandfathered or authorized to acquire more prohibited handguns.

I knew that this reality challenged loser would not disappoint.... .
Six months ago, he couldn't figure out a closed face fishing reel, and since then became captain of a "high risk takedown" team that performs their drills with airguns .
Now here he is, a "bona fide" 007 type secret agent...
Musta' got dropped on his head as a kid or sumpthin'..... .

i started out as a security guard- not much. i personally got my PAL training, and then became interested in CIT (Cash in Transit). Having my PAL training and the license in process, my employer (who has an affiliation with the RCMP) got me trained and certifed with RPAL firearms. (They sped up the entire process for me...) Anyways, after a few months doing CIT, and having come up the ranks from a security guard to CIT officer, I got some attention from a private emergency response team, who wanted me to join their ranks. So I jumped ship and joined them. After a month or so there, the HRT (High Risk Takedown) captain retired. Nobody else wanted the job- so I took it. Its a good job. Anyways, the company just got a military contract (I wish I could tell you more, but I can't- it's SO cool.), and they require that my team has our prohibited papers.
