Who's bought a Chrony from the U.S.?

#1 Post by cfraser »

Wondering about who has no prob shipping them here. It's not like it's a problem item, just need someone who'll do it. D&R might, gotta check tomorrow, but don't want to pay that US$35 shipping charge they mention somewhere so looking for other successful options JIC. Thanks.

My issue is Chrony guys set their Canadian prices back when the exchange rate was 50% and haven't changed it. Plus they're often sold much less than list in the US, and with a 18% CC exchange rate = better price. I hope...

I'm thinking of the Beta Master, about Cdn$120 from US and $180 from here.

The price has nothing to do with exchange rate. Chrony's are made in Canada. Volume would explain the price difference.

As far as I'm concerned, that explains the price discrepancy (ripoff is the less polite term) even less. I'm sorry, but something made locally that regularly sells for 50-something % of the price in the U.S. after going through the same or more channels is not acceptable. I'm talking Cdn$. Don't give me volume; shipping and everything else should be less $$. It's made locally to me, should be at a good price.

Really, no offense to you rather to their marketing, but on principle I won't buy it from a Canadian dealer based on the grossly inflated MSRP here. Note these are not "selling price", but the manufacturer's suggested price here vs the US one, by the manufacturer, right off the bat, has nothing to do with volume, everybody sells/discounts based on MSRP and not what they pay. Don't like being treated as a "stupid Canadian" by Canadian manufacturers. Just about every Canadian manufacturer sells their products for less in the US than here, and that's where I'll go to buy if I can, I'm not a rich man and paying 30+% more for stuff than necessary won't help. We as taxpayers are already paying lots of the Canadian manufacturers' overhead that they'd otherwise have to eat in the States, and are already subsidising the lower US prices. When people say "no problem" to things like this it's no wonder things are the way they are here, we're ripe for the picking and "they" know it. Rant over, but pay attention to Canadian plant and store etc. closings to see what I mean, they need our business but don't help their own cause so I don't feel the slightest bit guilty.:D

well volume is the reason....they could care less if they sold any in canada...because there is no volume
here.....they can sell more chrony,s in the state of texas as they sell in all of canada.
so they will take a lot less mark-up they a company says we will buy 1000......instead of the canadian ...i will take 5!.........i don,t like it either but that is the way it is,just be glad your not in the u.k!

Why bother buying chrony in US, when they're made here in Mississauga.
Chronotar & Shooting chrony, in fact they're so closed to each other and
one of the engineer of Chronotar used to work for Shooting chrony.

Sniper: I don't think you got my point: they're made "down the road" and I can import one for far less. MSRP has nothing to do with dealer/distributor volume, it's set by the manufacturer (what the "M" means!), that's my bone of contention. *Selling* price depends on store policy and volume. Canadian stores are not big into discounting like in the US, you're lucky if you get 10% off MSRP here, that's why MSRP matters so much more in Canada than the US.

If they don't want me to buy in Canada then I won't trouble them by doing so. Hey, it's not a lot of money in this case, but just a weird policy (or whatever). Sounds like D&R is reliable, somebody mentioned them in "where to buy", thanks.

[Totally OT, but here's a bigger example. I bought a TV that sells for $4600 all in at Future Shop. I imported it from a large reputable US store that does mail order to Canada, not grey market or refurb and full warranty good in Canada etc. Only thing I didn't get that I'd get here is a French instruction manual. Total cost including taxes and shipping was ~$1600. Worth waiting the extra week to get IMO. This isn't a made in Canada product, but a recent example for me of the general hosing we often get with what we have left after the tax hosing.]
