I'm going to Buffalo tomorrow to buy a PAL - rated air rifle

This is the place to talk about everything airgun related including air rifles, air pistols, pellet guns, pcp airguns and more.

Hotsky: Yep, you found me! You Sherlock Holmes, you! :lol:

Sniper: Yeah, I went accross the border, but they refused to sell me airguns above 500 fps because I was a Canadian citizen. I showed them my PAL, and they didn't care. Oh well...

Airguns are nearly unregulated in the States...you could be from Zimbabwe for that matter....why would they care? :?: :?: :?:

How did they know you were a Canadian citizen? Did you tell them? Or did they ask for ID or something?

Yeah, tehy asked for ID, and they just told me that they can't sell airguns to Canadians. Weird.

In a nutshell; P.A.L. is a license required for buying and register firearms and airguns over 500 fps.

so that's what it is...

Thanks a lot.I thought it meant Pressurised Airgun License since it has to do with a pressure,airgun and the license that was issued to any airgun below 500fps...ah well,it figures...

OK I asked the same question in another thread about importing non-restricted firearms (a PAL airgun in my case).

The information here is helpful. How can you pre-register a gun that you haven't even bought yet? If the long gun registry is repealed in the fall session of parliament, you can bet I am going to be doing some cross border shopping FOR SURE.

Regarding the question about PAL, more from the CFC website in relation to airguns:

Following are some weapons and devices that meet the definition of a firearm but that are deemed not to be firearms for purposes of the Firearms Act and related offences in the Criminal Code. Some of these items are exempted from the definition only if they were designed exclusively for a specific purpose and are intended to be used exclusively for that purpose by the person who possesses it. However, all of the items listed below are considered to be firearms if used in a criminal or negligent manner.

* Antique firearms;
* Devices designed exclusively for signalling, for notifying of distress, for firing blank cartridges or for firing stud cartridges, explosive-driven rivets or other industrial projectiles;
* Shooting devices designed exclusively forslaughtering domestic animals, tranquilizing animals, or discharging projectiles with lines attached to them;
* Air guns and other barreled weapons designed to have:
o A muzzle velocity of 152.4 meters (500 feet) per second or less and/or
o A muzzle energy of 5.7 joules (4.2 foot pounds) or less.

FYI this means you do not need a PAL to own an air rifle that meets the stated requirements. However, even if its not a PAL rated gun it is considered a firearm if you commit a crime with it in terms of what you can be charged with. Use a squirt gun to hold-up your local convenience store and you will be charged.

Hey Guys..

One thing to remember,, and this doesn't really matter in this case,, but in the future, or on parts and ammo, even scopes and rings..

It is Illegal to leave the US of A with any gun part, other than some air rifle and muzzle loading guns and parts..

for instance. If you get stopped at the border(US on the way out) with a Bushnell Elite rifle scope, rings, parts, screws, ammo, you "may" find yourself sitting in a US jail.

This is Indeed a fact..

I heard of one fellow being arrested, thrown in jail and charged for trying to leave the country with brass casings..Be careful what you guys try taking out of the US..

You must be referring to a International Import Certificate (IIC).

Hey Mitt...

No,, actually this has Absolutely Nothing to do with Canada what so ever..

This is Strictly a US law in regards to the Patroit Act( I Believe)

Canada doesn't care if you go to Bass Pro in Michigan and buy a scope,, but US Customs do.

You do need pre-approved Canadian Import paperwork to bring something in,, but again,, it has nothing to do with Canada itself..

I have a scope that needs to be repaired in the US...

I can't send it there, have it fixed and have them send it directly to me, without this paperwork..

An International Import Certificate (IIC) is issued by the USA before you intend to import anything. Its not a Canadian document.

You should phone CFC - they should be able to help. (and have to be good for something...)
