Advice on buying first air pistol

#1 Post by charlie876 »

Hi Folks..just dropped in from Gunutz, have never been into air guns but I am going to by something to play around with..mostly simple target shooting in back yard or basement..not to loud if possible. Any advice would be appreciated...22 or .177? Differences in cost to use, etc. Have researched but need some advice from the experts. Hear a lot about these 2240's but not useful if real noisy..Thanks

Hi Charlie,

Welcome aboard!

Yep, CO2 pistols have a tendency to be loud. The single stroke pneumatics and springers are usually much quieter. I enjoy a Weihrauch HW40 and HW45 for basement shooting and occasional outdoor plinking. I have reviews on my web site at http://my.tbaytel.net/coopers

Your spending limit will help narrow down your choices. The HW40 is about $200Cdn. The HW45 is $375-$400. The 10m target pistols (single strokers) will break $1000 in price. The popular IZH-46M is $389 and it's a good entry level single stroke 10m style pistol with low noise level. The Daisy 717 and 747 have about the same noise as the IZH but price is less.

Mail order is the way to go when buying an airgun. Here is a list I made for convenience.

Welcome to the group. Good to see that my posting over there received some attention.

What kind of budget did you have in mind? Also, are you looking to do some target shooting or just some fun plinking? Answering these questions will narrow down the field immensely.

Hi Charlie, welcome to the forum.

Looking for the first airgun, #1 check out how deep is your pocket then you can see all kinds are out there. #2 do you want a quite pistol or rifle, most springers are very quite. Shooting in the backyard, perhaps you should check with by law first, unless you live outside the city limit and then mostly no problem there.

Thanks guys..I have no problem with back yard plinking where I am! I guess I have no idea whether or not I will like it, so would like to keep the costs down to a minimum, say under $200 for sure. I guess the pneumatics are more expensive..I have an air rifle, which shoots great but would like to try a pistol. I think it is a Crossman 795, you crank the barrel to load it, .177 cal. In any event, sounds like a reasonably inexpensive hobby and since my 'real' guns are becoming a pain in the butt to use anymore, thought I would try something more basic. Will check out the links you gave me and any other advice is great.

you have come to the right place ! happy to help any newcommers,

i think that alot of people on this forum would agree that one of the best, if not the best pistol to start with (not only start with) would be a marksman 2004. its a cheaper copy of HW40 pistol, but dont be fooled by the word "cheaper". the pistol is absolutely amazing, i am not even going to go into describing it in detail.

its basic info is this:
extremely quiet
low recoil
single stroke pneumatic
420fps with .177 pellet
costs 99.99+tax in most canadian tire stores

hope this helped,

The Marksman 2004 is a great pistol if you get a good one. I am hesitant to recommend this product because of the massive amounts of returned pistols. Yep, many people have good ones but the amount of returns were enough for American Walmart stores to stop selling the product. One Canadian forum member returned 5 of them to Canadian Tire. Another Canadian member is stuck with his 3rd failure because he bought it in the USA and returned the first two. The other forums are loaded with history on the problems and dozens of postings asking for help. Many shooters will tear into the guts and try to polish the problem away and sometimes this works. I don't know if this is a good approach for a new air shooter.
I'm just trying to be up front about a product that had great potential. I really enjoy this design! The real deal Weihrauch HW40 or the Webley Nemesis might be a better choice. I had a Nemesis and currently own a HW40. Both are very accurate.
The Baikal IZH-53M is only $69.99 from GMK Armoury (spring pistol). I was there today and he has about 8 left. I have never shot this pistol so I cannot comment on design/feel/characteristics. Maybe someone else can?
The Daisy 717 at D&L Airgun is another choice for well under $200.

The choice list is getting longer:

Baikal IZH-53M
Daisy 717
Daisy 747
Weihrauch HW40
Webley Nemesis
Diana 3G
CZ Tex Mod.3
Crosman 1377 (maybe okay at at 4-5 pumps)

I would stay away from springer pistols as a first air pistol. It might just put you off from air pistols all together. They are tough to shoot well. Sometimes down right frustrating.

Nice quiet, accurate, easy to shoot well and inexpensive air pistol would be the Marksman 2004, Daisy 717 or the Crosman 1377.
If you are willing to spend a bit more, the IZH46M, HW40 or Daisy 747 would be excellent choices.

Yah, I agree with ETA. A single stroker or pumper might be best for a first air pistol.

Weihrauch HW40 for $196 at D&L Airgun

Webley Nemesis for $199 at D&L Airgun

Daisy 717 for $133 at D&L Airgun

Daisy 747 for $177 at LeBaron

hi there lets see yes springer pistols are out of the question here yes i think its a bad idea as well, the first springer pistol i ever got really turned me off of them for awhile, untill recently a firend of mine gave me a Daina 5G now there is a good targeting pistol, but iam sure it will turn you off of springer pistols as well for abit its alot of money for a new one,,any how the marksman 2004 same deal you gota find a good one. it looks cool but even i wont buy one after all the reviews, i have seen and other fourm members that had some problems. and some have had no problems, what you need is something simple I agree and something with some quaility as well. to me it sounds like you intend on firing off alot of rounds if you get to like it so iam going to sudjest a 1377 as well. i sell them new for 75.00 plus shipping as well plus pst only for those in ontario and thoes not in ontario not tax at all....the 1377 is a great pistol very realiable and decently accurat and the expence really is not alot..the crosman 795 you mentioned is a break barrel airrifle and we all have different opnions and mine is its not a good choice for and airrifle. you can get a slavia 630 for only a few dollars more and have 100 times better rifle.. any how id go for the 1377 is .177 cal and a good gun as well,, if you can find a decent older 1322 its a .22 cal that even would be a great choice for a pumpup pistol.....you can mount a scope or laser on it there is also a rifle stock you can get for it as well makes it a mini carbine and so on...any how have a great day and i hope we all have helped you out here....

First you should decide what you‘re looking for ? Single shot (CO2, springer, pneumonic ) ? Multi shot (CO2)? Do you want the gun (handgun) look realistic, have a real gun feel and finish? or just the cheepest thing that goes bang?

.177 is cheaper to shoot than .22 but if you’re used to pay for powder burner ammo you should be OK with either or…

Thanks for all the valuable input..a little overwhelming but certainly a lot better than walking in cold and buying a piece of junk. Will likely get something next week.

I'm a little late to this thread, but I had to put in my $0.02. I have a Marksman 2004, a HW40, and a Tempest. If quiet is your goal, the Tempest is by far the most quiet airgun I have ever fired; for a pistol anyway. I have a couple of friends with CO2 pistols, someone with a Marksman 2004 as well, and the one thing that comes up when we get together to shoot cans is how quiet my Tempest is in comparison to the rest.

Looking for bang for your buck? The Marksman 2004 cannot lead you wrong. Its a licensed chinese made HW40. The two side by side? The HW40 is nicer, smoother trigger, finished a little better. Its not much nicer though. $200 for the HW40, $99 for the Marksman 2004. You decide, they booth shoot nice. Its much louder than the tempest, though not as loud as the CO2 powered pistols.

I have also owned a couple of rotary clip style CO2 pistols; which are fun to shoot, but the CO2 adds up, and they're loud. My Webly tempest is my favorite air pistol, hands down. Its worth the money. I should note my Tempest is about 10 years old, in .177, has had probably 5,000 pellets put through it, and it still shoots great.
