new to the forum

#1 Post by Steyr »

Greetings from across the water to airgun shooters in Canada.

I am a confirmed airgun lover and I shoot for the sport and hunt if time allows.

My rifles of choice are a Steyr LG100FT with a range finding scope and side wheel focus used for FT shooting or static hunting. It is very accurate and with a simple mod is now fully silenced. It is devastatingly accurate and will never be sold.

My second rifle is an HW100 sporter as I could not get on with the thumbhole version. This is a new acquisition and replaces an Air Arms S400 modified by GML - which is a super slick gun, but as it is only single shot and more a competition gun, I sold it in favour of the HW.

This gun (HW100) is a very well built unit and very accurate too. The trigger - straight from the box - is very well set up and will probably suite 95% of those who pick it up. Only the 1st and 2nd stage travel will need a teak. Thoroughly recommend.

Before that, my HFT comp gun was an Air Arms S200 - Czech made co2 paper puncher converted to run on air. It is a small and budget end rifle but a serioisly good and accurate gun. It's size is small - I had to adapt my shooting style to make it work, but for the money, it gave guns three or four times the price a serious run for its money.

I shoot at a club in Burnham (near Slough) 20 mins from the west edge of London.

The guys that shoot there are good chaps, and it is a pleasure shooting with them.

I look forward to contibuting to the board and sharing my interests with kindred spirits.

Welcome Steyr!
Good to see UK airgunners join the forum.
You have some nice kits there.
As a fellow HW100 owner, be sure to check out the tear down of my HW100. http://www.airgunforum.ca/forum/viewtopic.266.html
Those AA S200s are sure sweet, absolutely the best PCP for the money. I have the version with the target stock and it can be adjusted to fits like a glove. The optional 10 shot magazine make it much sweeter.

Hello ETA.

Thanks. The Steyr is one of the best rifles I have ever shot. Do you get to see them on your side of the water ?

In actual fact, it was your breakdown of the HW100 that introduced me to your forum. Strangely the rifle was running at 11.7 ft lbs energy then went up to 12.5 which made it illegal. One of the dealers in the UK sent me your thread to explain how to tame it. Our law allows a max of 12ft lbs (I think that is 16 Joules) otherwise you require a Fire Arms Certificate (FAC).

WHat do you think of a single peice ramp as the two halve are very U shaped ? I have not heard of this problem in the HW range but it seems vulnerable to shift due to expansion and contraction ?

Thanks

Steyr

Yes, the Steyr is available in Canada. They are pricey. I guess if you want the best, you got to pay.

If you mean the action block in the HW100 is in two pieces and the U is indeed very deep to hold the magazine. The block is very solidly bolted together, so I don't think it is going to be a problem. However, every tiny bit helps. The good thing is that you can put a one piece mount on the HW100 without interfering with the magazine. With one in place, you won't find a stiffer action block. I myself have one mounted on mine. 8)

Here is my sweet shooting CZ200T/S200B in .177cal, equally as accurate as its big brother, HW100T in .22cal:

Indeed, the slot for the Magazine is very deep. The three sections are bolted together very well but there is - potentially - a lot of leverage that could be applied through bolt tension, scope clamp tension and general expansion and contraction of the action and the stock and both.

I think a one peice mount will be my next purchase but Even though I am a big chap, I find that the scope still sits a couple of mil higher than I desire. I find myself lifting my head off on shots - not ideal. They would have to be low - what have you used on your HW ? I shoot a Bushnel 10 x 40 with mil dot ret. Very small and light scope. Brilliant image and the turrets are the big finger versions with no cover caps.

That is a MK 1 ? I tried the thumbhole but did not find the stock comfortable as I prefer thumb up. The steyr is the obvios exception to the rule here.

You might be interested in a mod we do over here made by Webley Rifles Venom Custom shop. It is a replacement cylinder of light alloy that increases shot capacity and is front fill so you dont have to take out the cylinder each and every time. Snap fit connector and away you go. Doesnt expose the deep working parts to invasion by foreign bodies either. My Steyr also has a similar mod carried out by a UK company called Hydrographics.

That S200 looks very interesting - Assume its puff powered not co2 ? The adjustable stock makes this rifle so much easier to live with but the stippled or rubberised grip is different and so is the front stock section too. The retro fit magazines can be troublesome, but it is worth tweaking if your a hunter. The shot capacity is low for competion work though. Can get you a nice rear bolt and trigger if you like in brass or steel. Improves the feel of the trigger too.

Just stripped the HW to bring it back to within legal limits - Got a couple of thing to tell you that you may find useful - will catch up with you later on that one. Managed to do it without dismantling the cocking lever too. When I slotted an allen key in, I was surprised to find it was at an angle to the pin !!! But you can get to the grub screw another way

Regards

Simon

The scope on my HW100 is not very fancy. It is a Tasco Varmint/Tactical 2.5-10x42AO Mil dot with target turrets. Decent optics and a good value. The HW100 should be a MK2, since it came off the boat from Germany two month ago. In Canada, we are not allow detachable silencers. I guess the factory put on a non-detachable old style 'moderator' for us Americans.

I have seen lots nice accessories for both the HW100 and S200 over on your side. Unfortunately, you can't find them here. I guess not enough demand. The stippling and black-out on the S200 is custom. The magazine works well and smooth, just need a bit of de-burring and a tiny bit of lube.

Getting the grub screw off was the easy part. You do not need to remove the cocking lever. However, the factory use some kind of thread locking compound that is almost impossible to remove. ](*,) I tried holding the shuttle tight with non-marring plier and the hammer adjustment screw just would not budge. #-o I guess someone at the factory do not want it to move.

Tasco do some decent scopes. I got a Walther that cost me £ 750 and it is pants ? If Only I knew then what I know now.

Should be a Mk 2 then. My sporter has checkered front panels - a bit tarty but seen worse.

Yeah never quite understood the rationale about fixed silencers ? I want to use them all the time if only to protect my hearing - I SAID MY HEARING....... :D

My adjuster wasnt too bad luckily. Had a bit of a go at the UK importer as owners have no chance of backing their rifles off if they get hot.

If I can get you any accessories, just ask.

What activities do you boys get up to ?

Hunting,
Any competitions we have HFT and FT. Will leave expalnations for another day.

Initial impression is we have much more kit to choose from ? But not familiar with a lot of the makes and models I have seen so far so could be duplication.

Off to bed now as it is 1.30 in the morning

All the best

Simon
