masking tape residue/marks

This is just a heads-up.

I recently posted pictures of my newly painted Phantom.

The picture was taken before I added the clear coat, and I was pleased.

However I guess I didn't examine it carefully enough before clear coating.

Once I added the clear coat and took it under bright light I could easily see where the masking tape had been. I'm not certain whether the marks were caused by the tape marring the paint surface or were glue residue from the tape. I was no longer pleased and now the marks were entombed under two layers of clear coat.

The gun has now had the acetone treatment and is back to black plastic. Soap and water and steel wool on the way , and I'll try again.

Just one more way to have fun with an air gun.

PS: I didn't let the clear coat cure long enough and when I shot my unshaved face ended up with a black beard, so I added a cheek rest made of spray on rocker guard. It worked "ok" but it's a little "grippy". It's also acetone resistant. I'm thinking spray on truck bed liner might have been a better idea. Hmmm.

Going to need to use blue, or green painters tape.

if you used good quality pain or gun blue brake cleaner is great at getting the glue off.

Yup. Blue is what I used, plus green tape used for pin striping and bought from an automotive store. I pressed the edges down firmly to avoid bleeding, but I could see the outlines of the whole width of tape (both types) that contacted the black paint.

As I said, the marks may not be adhesive but damage to the paint. Perhaps 24 hours or so wasn't enough curing time.

Good to know about brake cleaner. I actually have some in the garage, but of course my big mistake was not examining the paint well enough before clear coating over top of whatever it was.

Anyway it's just something I thought people might want to be aware of.

Lighter fuel (not buthane) does great job for me and does not attack painted surfaces. It removes any sort of glue that I have tried so far, got to have a good stack of rag do... and sometimes a bit more elbow grease...

Pin stripe tape for the fine lines and what ever around.

Pin stripe makes nice crisp lines.

Use windex to remove tape glue residue. I used it to strip off all the french warning stickers from my quad and sled when they were new and it works great.

Intersting - I use WD40 for removing tape residue from my guns. It does not harm my gun finishes.

Ronson lighter fluid from P/A in the big yellow can. Zippo guys here will know it well. Works better on tape residue than goo gone, and won't harm most paints...

Excellent pre-blue prep for the cold-blue variety.
