Umarex SAA as a fly swatter 5-3/4" BB vs 7-1/2" pellet

#1 Post by xelntchance »

Summer is here and so are the flies, mosquitoes and moths. I have been having some success and a bit of fun dispatching pests in the gazebo with the SAA's. Using gas only, no BB's or pellets. Against a screen up to 12" the 5-3/4" smooth bore does a remarkable job on moths and larger flies, much appreciated by my wife. Our gazebo provides a target rich environment including static, random and wing shooting opportunity. Great fun and a challenge.
Loaded with gas only it is a lot more fun and less sadistic than a bug zapper.
Now to the comparison. The 7-1/2" pellet SAA just doesn't work as well. Even at ranges of an inch or so it is disappointing. Flies seem to shrug off the blast and continue being annoying. How ever the 5-3/4" BB smooth bore is more permanent. I have with gas alone been able to blast the pests at ranges of up to 12 whole inches, with the caveat of an occasional coup des gras from my shoe.
Up against a window screen can leave visible remains, I suggest just pull the curtain until the next rain shower.

On an unrelated note, after I tried the long barrel SAA I loaded up some pellets ( an old batch of crosman wad cutters from the 90's) and I shot at some knot holes on a fence.
Boy was I surprised. 25 yards at a knot hole and I got a 2" group. All I could think was 'well that's not right' so I picked another knot hole and a third. 18 rounds all Approximately 2" groups with one flier. I pulled out my 586 and did the same, just to see what would happen,... it wasn't 2", 5"-7" and that was with 3 different pellets.
I have always used the 586 as my standard for accuracy and honestly it just got blown away by an SAA with terrible sights and a horrible trigger pull.

Very surprised your SAA has a horrible trigger. I own 5 of them and the trigger is stellar on all of them, with the exception of the John Wayne Shootist model which I haven't fired yet, so cannot say.

I bought a couple spring airsoft pistols and use them for bees and bugs out at my trailer. Also keeps the black birds away from my bird feeders. Shoot around pop cans and paper targets also when bored. Airsoft pistols sit in the pockets of my Director chair from Princess Auto.

When I first got the pellet version the trigger was 10 lbs with a lot of over travel. Some aluminum tape solved the over travel and the weight has come down to around 8 lbs with use. I for see some sear stoning in its future. The BB version does have a nice trigger though.

Yours is defective.

Mine are 2 pound triggers all day long, all of them, even the 7.5" model.

Review from Tom Gaylord at Pyramid Air (excerpt). He is reviewing the pellet version. Link to part two here: http://www.pyramydair.com/blog/2015/11/ ... ed-part-2/

Trigger pull
I measured the trigger pull at 2 lbs. 2 oz. It varied between 2 lbs. and 2 lbs. 5 oz. It is is very light for a single action and it is also pretty crisp. I can feel a small amount of movement in stage 2, but not that much.

You just gave me an excellent idea to dispatch these flying nuisances that periodically slip through my window screens and open doors. Now I can't wait for a mosquito or fly to enter my residence.

No surprise with the SAA(Pellet Version) shooting 2" groups at 25 Yds. Believe it or not, my smooth bore (BB Version) 5.5" SAA shoots 3.5" to 4.5" groups with RWS Superdome Pellets from a distance of 20 Yards; standing and unsupported. The trigger pull on my SAA is light and smooth. It's too bad your trigger has a heavy pull. :( The accuracy of these Umarex shooters are very good; considering they are plinking/fun guns. I'm hoping Umarex will come out with the "Civilian" model of this shooter with the 4.75" barrel; or even better yet, the "Sheriff's" model with the sub 4" barrel.

Like short barrel shooting? Watch this...it is not a single action video, but this goes to show you that you dont need an 8" hog leg to reach out there...and it helps if you can shoot like this gentleman :)

Yep, Hickok 45 is the man! He's hitting the chicken and ram just south of the tires and red plate at around 60 yards; all with a 3 inch barrel. I remember shooting the same gun with a 6 inch barrel at the range and I was only able to get 1 shot out of 6 on a paper target at 50 yards. That 1 shot that made it on paper was a lucky one that just hit the bottom corner. Phenomenal shooting from Hickok nevertheless.

You guys need to buy a Bug-a-Salt
Facebook is like ancient Egypt, people write on walls and worship cats

You can’t buy a single airgun for everything. Golfers use many different clubs, airgunners need more than one gun

You used to be able to buy a kit to convert (temp) a 2240 to an "A-Salt gun." They even sold you the 2240 with the kit as an option. Interestingly, they were cheaper there than from an air gun dealer. I bought the kit and three 2240s from them about three years' ago.

Unfortunate downside: Not particularly Canada friendly. Neighbours called the cops to let them know I was shooting an air gun within city limits. :(

Edit: They're still out there! P.S.: notice the difference between the two words
